But when I look down everyday, I'm sure handcream, foundation, skin oil is somewhere on my diamond.

Did anyone study the real life performance of a dianmond?
I think they will change reflection, and color will be effected too.

At the end of day, bigger is always better, right?

Yes, dirt & skin oils definitely change the way diamonds returns light! Another reason to clean them regularly and prevent buildup (sounds like a toothpaste ad )

I know a lot of people that remove their rings when they're washing their hands or applying lotion. They also clean their diamonds regularly/daily.

+1- I put lotion on before I put rings on and I always clean my jewelry after I wear it. Just a little scrub with a soft toothbrush.

My rings are the last thing I put on as I head out of the door (after makeup, lotions, etc) & they're the first thing I take off when I come back home. I clean them everyday.

WRT "bigger" being better, that's not necessarily true. Having an amazing cut (ideal, H&A, etc) is always best, so if you're looking for "bigger", you should only maximize size if you can do so without making compromises on the grade of the cut.

I like to wash my hands with dish soap and or BBW Deep Cleansing Antibacterial hand soap. Both seem to cut the gunk on the rings in a pinch, though I don't put makeup or lotions on with my rings on and I don't usually touch my face a lot during the day anyway, other than to blow my schnoz.

But the cleaner you can keep your stones the happier they'll be and the better they'll look. Even the best cut stone will look like a dud if it's all covered in crud.

Hi Ame! I don't want to thread-jack but have a quick question. Your rings always look awesome, so when you use dish soap you've found that it works for a quick cleaning & doesn't leave a residue?

I never take my rings off in public places, but everytime I wash my hands (which is often) I feel like I'm leaving a residue on the stones & it bugs me a lot. Of course I clean & soak them every night, so am I worrying too much about the soap during the day?

Gunk on my diamond? - Yuck!

I think you'll find that those of us that really care about diamond performance clean our stones regularly. Yes oils and other grime do change the optical properties of a diamond significantly and really dim light performance and eliminate fire.

I touch up my ring during the day with Dawn "Power Clean" dish soap and warm water, so it NEVER looks dull or oily. So yes, bigger is better, if the cut is great, but bigger and dull from a bad cut or clarity, is "No Bueno". When wearing a diamond, let it look it's best, keep it clean. That's my motto. (Just to be sure, was your reasoning that it is a waste to get a super cut stone, when it will be all gunked up from oils during the day and look average anyway?) I can't speak for anyone else, but mine sparkles all day. I think you will be much happier if you stick with a great cut, "big enough" stone. (interesting perspective though! I will be curious to read the responses) I guess everyone's diamond's real life performance will be different, so hard to study, I imagine.

I clean my ring once or twice a week. I don't use hand lotion except in the most extreme of circumstances (and never while out of the house anyway) and I'm not sure how makeup would get on it since it's not like I'm touching the back of my ring finger to my face, so the main stuff that could get on it is skin oil (I try to minimize touching it but my fiance does not) and food grease (hamburgers are the worst!). I guess in the summer ONE TIME I wore sunscreen with my ring, and that was a disaster with the pave and it was so hard to clean, so now I just wear a plain band when wearing sunscreen, or a band with a single stone and no pave. I find that the diamonds look SUPER SPARKLY until my fiance grabs my hand and gets his hand oils on them, lol, and then that level of very sparkly for 3-4 days of almost all day normal for me wear. Cleaning every day is overkill for me because I don't notice the difference, but if I don't clean at least every week I do notice it. It might be different if I had a diamond center stone rather than a sapphire.

I agree that coloured stones are different. My diamond needs daily cleaning in order to maintain its sparkle but my coloured stones can get away with it for an extra 2 or 3 days.

I have yet to have an issue with Method, which is what I have at home (the orange one). If I don't wash them in the kitchen, then it's BBW Deep Cleansing Anti Bacterial Soap. Both seem to work well and neither seems to leave any crud behind, but I only let the foam get on the rings, not the gel itself. Any "residue" that may get left behind is taken care of when I clean later.
