I watched my dear MIL suffer from, and eventually pass from Alzheimer's. Sad is putting it mildly. I too hope I'm wrong about my mom, at least in respect to finally not knowing who I am. But I am certain, (as there are MAJOR indications) that her mind is going. How far, only time will tell.
And yes, I am going to need support, as I am the only child in town. I took care of my dad (parents were divorced) the last year of his life, and while he remained sharp as a tack until the end, it was still emotionally and physically exhausting. And that was only a year, a relatively short time considering how long a parent may linger. I did it without any group support, only my dear hubby, who was always there for me. But I can't do that again, I don't think.
