Hi guys I''m new to this site and had a question. So I''ve been wanting to get my girlfriend the Harry Winston cushion pave diamond ring for a while now and debating how I should buy it. I was in Vegas last weekend and saw a 1 carot priced around $20k or so.

Well I know this topic has been discussed before but I thought I''d start a new thread for my specific case. By December of this year I will have about $11,000 saved and wondering if its a bad idea to finance it with a credit card. I have a card that has a 7.99% fixed APR and will be able to pay off the remaining balance within two years. I plan on having a longterm engagement maybe 1.5 to 2.5 years or so. I just graduated college in 2005 so want to be more stable financially. I know I could get a cheaper ring that would fit in my budget but want to get a nice ring to start off with rather than upgrading later.

Would you folks save more or go for it? Also, Harry Winston probably doesn''t have any payment plans but if they do like 0% for a year would that change your mind?

By the way, anyone know how much the bigger carot cushion cut engagement rings run, I''m thinking less than 2 carots?

Thanks a ton, Al

Nope don''t do it. You can buy a gorgeous cushion online for a lot less, and stay solvent in the mean time.

i wouldnt do it. i would much rather have a quality ring, without the debt.

namebrands really dont matter when it comes to diamonds, not worth the extra $$$. If it were me, I would take a bigger, better quality ring than a HW any day!

Ditto Kaleigh and MsFlutter. I too would far rather have a bigger diamond purchased online and stay solvent. You can get a beauty online which will hold it''s own against the HW any day. $20k for a 1 ct round is horrendously expensive, even for the HW name

The only way I would finance anything is if the store has a 12 month interest-free payment plan. It''s against my religion to pay finance charges.

I agree, I wouldn''t suggest financing. I''m with the gang that I''d rather have a larger stone. Cushions face up smaller and a 1 carat is a nice size but you''ll have a super budget of 11K by Christmas so I''d just stick with that and not go into debt. You can probably get a larger stone and someone like Leon Mege could make a similar setting without paying for the HW markup.

Does your girlfriend insist on a HW ring? If not, spend your $$ more wisely elsewhere.

Also, 7.99% is a high rate to pay. Perhaps your parents can give you a loan at 3-5%?

Most people here don''t advocate financing, but I do, under one condition. If you can, secure a credit card with 0% interest for one year or longer if possible. If you can''t get one of these, I wouldn''t finance.

I also wouldn''t pay for the Harry Winston name. You can get a 1 carat cushion with a pave setting custom made for a lot less than what you pay at Harry Winston.

I''m of the belief that for luxury items like diamonds, if you can''t pay cash for it, then you''re not supposed to have it. Have you talked w/ your GF about this? There''s a good chance she would be horrified at the thought of you going into debt to buy her a ring. I know I would. With your budget you can buy an incredibly beautiful ring online without going into debt!

Thanks to everyone that responded. You guys mention that I should buy online, any good retailers? The only one I know of is Blue Nile. Haven''t done much research. Also, anyone know of any good jewelers that custom design rings in the Seattle area? thanks

Wow were you smart to poll this forum about your HW item. I definitely agree with what everyone said here. That ring is priced for the guy who just won 100K at the craps table - not a nice young guy buying his engagement ring! Debt is bad - don''t do it. 0% is the only good debt provided you will pay off all of it while the APR is still 0.

Cushions are lovely but at 1 ct they will look somewhat smaller than a round and you might want to try and push up the face up size since your desire is to possibly avoid a future upgrade. If you do get a very nice make round it will be a stone that you can modify in the future instead of a full "upgrade". Meaning, you can buy side stones for it, etc. Easy to match stones to a round.

I like BN, and the other vendors on this forum seem really good. There is a sales tax issue, for BN, since I recall you mentioned that you lived in Seattle. You might want an out of state vendor, but that is between you and your accountant and the IRS!

DON''T DO IT.

Listen man, 11K will buy a FABULOUS 1.5-ish carat cushion in a pave setting ... or maybe 1.3 ish in a pave halo ALMOST EXACTLY like the Harry Winston one

And you''d never have to pay another CENT. Spent the year, year & a half saving for the WEDDING or the HONEYMOON or A HOUSE! Seriously!!

I think most gals just out of school (or most gals PERIOD) would be jumping for joy over an 11K ring. So, stick with us, we''ll help you find a fabulous replica EVEN BIGGER than you thought you''d get.

Greenlake do fantastic jewellery. I am so taken with their designs I was trying to see if I could visit when I''m in Chicago next year (I''m in the UK) ... then I looked at a map and realised how far away Seattle is.

A few people on PS have had custom work there that was gorgeous.
