Has anybody watched the Darren Aronofsky film, The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser? I watched it the other day and found it incredibly moving. It's one of those movies that has really stayed with me - specifically, I'm sure, because of Fraser's sympathetic, repelling, beautiful, gentle, self centered, wise and ignorant, complex, complex, complex portrayal of the central character.

Just wondered if anyone else had seen it. In my opinion, it was a performance of a lifetime.

Not yet, but I intend to.

Thanks for the reminder. :wavey:

Thanks for that recommendation @mrs-b
May I ask if any animals are harmed in the film?
Just yes or no, no details please. Thanks

It's a film about a morbidly obese person trying to reconnect with this daughter.

No animals appear anywhere in the film.

And you know how on-the-same-page you and I are when it comes to animals - I couldn't tolerate that at all.

Brendan Fraser stepped away from Hollywood decades ago after being se***lly assaulted. Very sad situation that nearly destroyed him. However, his comeback, in this film, is nothing short of amazing. I really hope this is a new beginning for him, he deserves it.

I believe he just won the Screen Actors Guild award for his performance. He is getting rave reviews.

Thanks! Yes, I know. I momentarily forgot. After being burned a few times I make sure before I watch any movie that might have animals in it that no animals are harmed. We started watching a documentary over a month ago where there were Ocelots involved and well, 15 minutes in I realized what a horrible mistake I made. I still cannot get it out of my mind :(

I am looking forward to watching The Whale -thanks for the rec

I'm limiting my exposure to sadness & tragedy so I won't be watching this movie for quite awhile regardless of the accolades Fraser is getting for his performance. Just not able to do it yet.

I watched it after learning about it on here. It was sad but interesting, I thought. Thanks for the recommendation, Mrs. B!

I’m like that these days. I don’t even read news stories which sound like they might upset me. I had a great friend who loved “misery lit” - stories of people who went through horrendous experiences - some ending well but all horribly traumatic. I couldn’t get my head around it. She said it made her feel better about her own life!

I used to be scathing about people living “in their own little bubble”. Now I’m like, just let me build that wall - la la la fingers in ears I know damn well how privileged I am and I want to insulate my brain from anything horrible and traumatic because there is so much in the world and where I encounter it it takes me weeks to stop thinking about sad things.

When I was a teenager I used to listen to sad music and watch tragic films and revel in the referred drama of it all. Because I’d never felt it myself in real life. The older I get the less I am able to tolerate the pain of others because it’s REAL to me. Although I admire, most incredibly, those who are able to.

Just watched this last night. Wonderful performance by Fraser

I just saw it since it showed up included with DH's Paramount Plus Showtime.

Excellent film!

One question though:
Why did the plate, of the wild bird he was feeding on his window ledge, break?
What did that mean, if anything?
