Has anyone had their prongs tightened?

My prongs are loose, so I''m thinking about sending my ring into a vendor to have them tightened. Does anyone know what this entails? Will they have to take apart my whole ring? I''m also a little paranoid about my diamond accidentally being switched. Does anyone know what protocols are in place to ensure this doesn''t happen? Also, any ideas regarding costs? Thanks in advance.

Nope, no need to take anything apart to tighten prongs. Quite the contrary. To tighten a prong, the bench jeweller will use a prong pusher to force the prongs back down to their original position - that is all.

If you are afraid of a stone being switched, first of all look for a reputable jeweller. Very, very few diamonds are worth the loss of reputation, which will kill a business. If your diamond has a certificate number scribed in the girdle, then your problem is solved. Just ask the jewller to check and write down that it is indeed the stone in the certificate. If not, when handing your ring in, ask for a look under the microscope and compare the inclusions to the map on the certificate and ask the jeweller to take a look as well and acertain that it is indeed the stone. In any case, when picking up your tightened ring, just check if the inscription or inclusions match.

I have a shared prong wedding band and have taken my band in to have the stones checked and occaisionally, the prongs have been in need of tightening.
Never once did I have to leave my ring and come back for it later. They were always able to check it and if needed, tighten while I waited. I think I am very lucky that my local jeweler understands that no lady wants to be without her wedding jewelery for any amount of time....
Once, he asked me to come back at another less busy time. He doesn''t want me to be without my precious! Love this type of service
