Have I purchased a badly cut diamond?

The channel set small diamonds are almost certainly chipped as they are overlapping.
This is a disaster unfolding.

Personally I would keep looking for a better replacement. Reasons are simple.

1. Very thin girdle is a problem.

2. A 10 year old report + very thin girdle is scary. Likely some damage of some sort, and without a current report, you don’t really know what you are buying today.

3. Ignoring proportions, symmetry is also only very good and not excellent. For max performance you need good angles and good meet point symmetry both. Also polish is VG although we could live with that if required.

4. I’m not a fan of larger tables with shallow depths. This stone does have a 34/41 combo and that steeper pavilion does help it a bit. But also there is a “cliff” of sorts that I like to avoid. Remember 41 is the averaged and rounded pavilion values. We don’t want any of the actuals to exceed 41.2. For this reason it can be very hard to find a great 34/41.

6. It’s pre-loved. Assuming you had an updated report (which you don’t) then some buyers are cool with this. Others want “new” that no one has previously owned or worn. If everything else was in check it’s a preference thing. In your case you have more concern because of #2.

I just don’t see the win for you. IMO, it’s a higher risk option without great enough reward to justify the risk. In other words, the risk-reward ratio is lopsided against you. I definitely would not take home and I would reject this stone and seek to find a different and better one.

Unfortunately I don’t think I can get my money back as the agreement on deposit was none refundable so I’ll have to go down the avenue of either keeping this suggested one and getting it rectified or trying to get an exchange done .. I’m so upset by it all as I’ve trusted someone and now it looks like I was caught out?

You didn't get caught out, don't beat yourself up. Diamonds, like most expensive things, are a specialist subject and you've come to a specialist forum. If you were going to buy a yacht or a new car, you wouldn't only trust the seller of that particular item, would you? That's effectively what you've done, put all your trust into the person making money on selling you an item.

The average person goes "oh, it sparkles, wonderful, I'll take it" and that's fine, there's nothing wrong with that. You've stumbled onto a hobby forum and the people here can definitely help but you have to be willing and able to change your ring for them to be able to do. If you can't, don't worry, your diamond is good and much better than what the average British person, like me, buys (IMO).
