Ok... Right now I am taking an American Folklore class. I have to do a study on something in folklore. My topic is:::::::

The different ways suggested to self induce (or with help) induce labor. I am talking about the ''old wives tales'' ''herbal remedies'' and ''folk medicine''

I want to know ANYTHING that you were told. From both mothers and non mothers as well as the men. If you do not mind.

IF you could include
1. Everything you have heard
2. age bracket: 18-25 26-35 35-50 or 50 yrs or more young.
3. What part of the country you grew up in? N, S, Mid West, E, W or what country you were from
4. Are you a mother? Father? no children?
5. Who did you hear these from?

If you feel comfortable only answering a few I understand. Just tell me what you know..
I''ll start for exmaples:

Lots of sex.... Lots of walking....

Your turn!

i know many
2.gif
but it wouldn''t be a fair demographic since i have worked in labor & delivery and learned them all there!
20.gif

no matter on demography... I am more interested in what people have heard and what they have heard others beleive. I have heard MANY from many different sources... some of which are quite interesting... to say the least LOL

Yea, oddly though I grew up around ob/gyns I never heard any. I think the only ones I ever heard were from the book Good Wives. Though that might be beucase I am 22 and have never been with child.

Hey mine, cool topic! Here''s what I heard: eating lots of spicy foods, i.e. chili peppers, tobasco sauce-covered foods, etc.
1.gif

to answer the rest of the questions:

2. 25 yrs. old
3. grew up in the midwest
4. No children
5. heard it from some friends years ago. I also heard if you DON''T want to get pregnant, do handstands after sex ( if you have it unprotected, that is). Well, we all know THAT is very untrue!!
16.gif

1. I''m probably not much of a help...the only ones I''ve ever heard are lots of sex and eating spicy foods
2. 18-25 age bracket
3. Midwest
4. Single, no children (which is probably why I haven''t heard much)
5. Ooh, I''m really sorry that I can''t pinpoint a source, not from my parents, probably just stuff I''ve seen on tv or overheard at work

This is fun!! I am pregnant with #2 and I use a midwife so I have heard a few things! I ofcourse have heard to have lots of sex, walk, drink a shot of vodka, castor oil, have your cervix stretched, and herbal mixtures of cohash. When I was pregnant with Eden I did the walking and had 2 glasses of wine and the next morning I woke up in labor! Good luck in yoour class MINE, sounds interesting.
Other answers: I live an hour and a half outside of Philadelphia, and I am near alot of amish communities, who do alot of things if not all things naturally and the old fashioned way! We have a great midwifery community here. Oh and I 28.

Come to work with me one day-you will hear lots of crazy things-I am a labor and delivery nurse here in NJ. Let me think a little, and I promise I will come up with something crazy....

Oh I''ve heard them all (and tried many!!

I''ve heard suggestions from Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, relatives and friends.

2) Walking - it worked for number 5

3) shhhh- SEX
emembarrassed.gif

4) nipple stimulation
20.gif

5) bumpy car ride (never works)
32.gif

6) Red Raspberry Leaf Tea- worked for number 3

7) Stripping the Membranes (OOOOOOOOMMMMMMGGGGGG-hurts like h*ll, didn''t work)

8) Threatening my husband. ie: "IF I DON''T GO INTO LABOR SOON YOU''RE GOING TO DIE"
12.gif

(that worked a couple times-
41.gif
)

I can''t think of anymore right now.

If you want to chat MINE just pm me.

well, i'm 32, have two kids and live in the midwest. I have heard many of the same ones Seven's mentioned in her list from other women at church, the ymca, etc. Around here 99% of women have an epidural, so not too many midwife stories. My one friend had to eat black strap molasses to boost her iron while she was prenant

Fun question.....just up my alley! I am a well known spreader of "ol wives tales"....being an "ol wife" myself! Grew up in Cincinnati....have two grown children (the oldest is going to make me a grandma in early January!).....

Here''s what I''ve heard...

1- Drive over at least three railroad crossings and labor will begin that night
2 -Sex, of course, as tolerated
3- Walk the hills of French Park in Cincinnati Ohio....worked with BOTH of mine!
4- Eat chocolate cake - labor will start later that night. Also worked BOTH times

I''m sure there''s more - I''ll have to try and recall. Heard "most" of the above from my Mom.

VERY VERY cool ladies.. please keep them coming.. if you have only heard 1 that is perfect too... EVEN if they sound rid. keep them coming!

Thank you sooo very much everyone!!!

1. Walking, spicy foods, different kinds of tea, sex, playing tug-o-war while lying down (worked for friend to speed up delievery)
2. age bracket: 18-25
3. SE, Florida
4. No children and, in fact, am adopted, so my mother never gave birth, either!
5. Various family and personal friends over the year, became more aware when good friend had first child this past year.

1. I''ve also heard spicy food, sex, nipple stimulation. Also have heard exercise--taking long walks, etc.
2. 26-35
3. What part of the country you grew up in? Southern California
4. No
5. ?? My sister, TV, friends who are trying to conceive

1. I''ve heard the lots of sex, walking/exercise thing too. But also to eat spicy food like Mexican etc.
2. age bracket 25-35
3. I grew up primarily in the mid-west
4. I have 1 son--who the night before he was due, I had spicy food, went for a long walk & had sex...I woke up in labor 4 hours after I went to bed.....
5. I remember reading the old wives tales--most of my friends were not pregnant or parents...

This is very cool MINE! I would love to hear the list when you get it all complete!

1. Spicy food, long walks and castor oil
2. 18-25
3. Virginia
4. No
5. Mother, family, family friends while my SIL was pregnant. Going to Ruby Tuesdays worked for her... hahaha
9.gif

Ive seen accupuncture done on TV to help induce.

This doesnt go along with inducing labor, but one of my grandmothers always said you could tell the sex of the baby if you dangle a sewing needle over your right wrist by a thread. Let it touch, pick it straight up and if it spins in a circle over your wrist its one and if it goes back and forth its the other. Unfortunatly i cant remember which means which! I think circle=girl and back/forth=boy. Anyone else heard of this? We tried it on my SIL, but i cant remember if it worked or not.

If the needle circles - it''s a girl. Straight up and down - boy. Worked for me and for everyone I knew that was preggers around the same time my kids were born! Before the sonograms could tell.....the needle and thread could!!!
So glad someone mentioned this....I thought about it immediately when I read this! I must try it on my daughter-in-law....will let you know how it comes out!

I was told a version of the swinging needle thing. You were supposed to use your wedding ring instead. If it went back & forth it was a boy & round and round it was a girl (or maybe it was the opposite). Also, if would start and stop...each time it went to a stop then restarted it indicated a different child. On me, I clearly remember that when my friend did it on me, it started & stopped 3 times. On my then husband it only started & stopped once which made everyone wonder about us. Funny thing is, my first husband passed away--we had one child together...and now I am getting married again to a guy who has 1 kid (do step-kids count????). That only leaves me needing one more kid for the old wives tale to be true.....However, my fiance and I have decided we probably won''t have a kid of our own...But somewhere in the back of my head is this stupid old wives tale making me wonder if we will have an OOPS baby....

1. Everything you have heard: drinking castor oil, drinking lots of Orange Juice, lots of sex, walking a lot
2. age bracket: 18-25 26-35 35-50 or 50 yrs or more young. 26-35
3. What part of the country you grew up in? N, S, Mid West, E, W or what country you were from? West Coast

5. Who did you hear these from? Message Boards related to babies (Babycenter)

This is a link that might find a place in your research - Skipolinis Prego Pizza

I swiped the text from the page:

Legend of the "Prego" Pizza

In the spring of 1981, a woman desperate to give birth after a trying pregnancy, wandered into Skipolini''s Pizza in downtown Clayton. Jokingly, the woman demanded that the manager give her a pizza that would make her have the baby soon. Seeing her desperation, the manager concocted a pizza with just about every known topping in the restaurant.

The masterpiece had thirteen different toppings including extra onions and extra garlic. The pizza was loaded with fresh vegetables and six types of meat. The creation weighed over four pounds and could have cured the hunger of several small countries. The results were amazing. The woman left the restaurant after eating the "Prego" pizza and went into labor that same evening. So began the amazing history of the first ever, the original, "Prego" pizza.

After years of success, the "Prego" pizza has been growing in popularity. It has been recommended by doctors and OBGYN''s everywhere. The pizza gives hope to pregnant mothers who are just ready to put a happy ending to a long nine months. The "Prego" pizza has been recognized by newspaper, magazine, radio, and television programming alike. In the early years, radio personality Dr. Don Rose first helped publicize the pizza on the radio station KFRC. The successes of the "Prego" pizza have been documented in the Contra Costa Times, Pizza Today magazine, Diablo Magazine, Gourmet Magazine, and many other local publications. The popularity of the "Prego" has also been enhanced by short clips aired on KTVU channel 2, Evening Magazine, CNN, and KPIX, channel 5 news.

I had NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER that my first child was a boy. I didn''t even think of a girls name. The "ol wives tale" on this is that if you carry straight out front with no swelling - it''s FER SURE a boy. If you "puff out" everywhere -- it''s a girl !

Thats what happened to my mom and SIL. The boys were all out in the front and the girls were everywhere! And a friend carried her boys all out in the front, although she never had a girl to compare.

Hi Judi
35.gif

i too grew up in Cincinnati an miss it a lot
39.gif
My dad still lives there so i get to back a few times a year
36.gif

What part of town are you from?

The two wives tales I''ve heard are eating chinese food and drinking dill pickle juice straight from the bottle. I''ve also heard most of the other ones I''ve read on here, but the chinese food and pickle juice are the ones I''ve heard of that supposedly really worked
2.gif

Nothing ever worked for me, though. I''ve given birth three times, and had to have labor induced ALL THREE TIMES, dangit!

As for the stats:

I''m 42
live in the Midwest (central Illinois)
I''m a mother
heard the chinese food thing from friends, and the pickle juice thing from my grandma

I have heard the walking one and the stripping the membranes and a friend of mine had some kind of tea leaves or something put on her cervix to soften it.
23.gif

With my first it was taco pizza that did it. Of course, I was 11 days late, so it was probably just time. My second was also 11 days late...I don''t think she was gonna come out till she was darned good and ready!

IslandDreams, your story about your husband DOES make you wonder, doesn''t it?

I have a friend in England who had his palm read once on a street corner. The palm reader immediately guessed his name correctly. She then told him a couple of other things that gave him goosebumps. But..she also said that he had two girls and two boys. He told her no, that he just had two girls. He was on a wait list to have a vasectomy at that time and his wife was on the pill. Well...his wife took antibiotics and ended up getting pregnant. They now have the two girls AND identical twin boys.
9.gif

And I''m 35-50 and in the Midwest...

I LOVE to hear from former Cincinnatians! I grew up around Roselawn - Golf Manor. My whole family is still there (Mom, 3 bros, neices, etc.!). I go "home" to visit them as often as possible. Just came back from my nephews Sycamore HS graduation. I''ve been here in Houston for about 12 years, but I "left my heart in Cincinnati".

Have you ever heard that eggplant induces labor? It''s a local "tradition" for many here in Atlanta. I never tried it (but I had three planned Caesarian sections anyway...)

http://www.wchstv.com/gmarecipes/eggplantparmigian.shtml

My SIL has four kids and she swore by spicy food (Mexican, usually) followed by a very long walk.

Castor oil
walking
sex

BTW, with my first chikd I was 100% positive I was having a boy. Waited til the birth to find out. I had a room full of blue stuff, and the nursery was also blue.
9.gif
She is six and a half years old now.

My 2nd, I figured it was a girl. Was right about that one.

My 3rd, again, I knew it was a girl. EVERYTHING felt the same (only I was sicker, if that was possible LOL). I had an amnio at 18w and found out I was getting a baby boy.

I stink at predicting my own kids'' genders, but I am really good at guessing those of my pregnant friends. Go figure.
