Hello All,

Im thinking of designing a ring, and I'm looking for large emerald cut stones in pretty colors. I particularly like Morganite. I want to set it with grey diamonds, and either rose gold and irradiated grey gold... anyway, the design is for after, first i have to find the stone!

I have found these two. one is a lot bigger than the other, but the smaller is a lot more expensive (per carat). Any ideas why?

They both state they are heat treated. Is this a problem? I read that sometimes heat treated morganites can change color in the sun 9ie are rendered unstable after heating), but i have also read that it is fine to do so. Is there a specific lab certificate i should be looking for? Anything to be careful of?

Thank you!

also does it matter where its from? i.e. origin?

thanks!

I am not an expert, but I see lots of grey in the second one. Maybe that explains the price difference?

yes you are right, i didn't notice that. I actually prefer the proportions of the first one, but of course before i buy anything, i want to try and be as educated as possible in my choice.

Thank you!

I think the percentage of morganites that are heated is astronomical...something like 90%-98% are heated if I am correct. Nothing to worry about as the treatment is stable....I think ;))

thanks barrett!

Do you know this seller? ANyone have thoughts on these stones?

PI is a reputable vendor. Although the first one is small, it has better colour. The second is large but in spite of that, the colour is less saturated. Since both stones are from PI, how about asking them why the pricing is similar for stones of very different sizes? Perhaps there is less demand for morganites of such an unwieldy sizes.
