I just bought a BN signature ideal 1.24 H SI1 in a cirque setting.

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-engagement-ring-platinum_7813

It''s certified by GIA as Ex-Ex-Ex on cut, polish and symmetry.
Depth: 61.6%
Table: 57%
Crown angle: 34.7
Pavillion angle: 40.7
Culet: 0.3%

The HCA score is 1.2, rating excellent on all categories except spread.

However, the GCAL / Blue nile certificate shows a picture of the crown and pavillion and the hearts / arrows patterns are not as crisp as I would have imagined.

Considering the HCA score and the 3-ex ratings, am i looking into this too much? I mean, the ring looks beautiful, but I''m wondering if i got a dud (i read that there is a lot of leeway in rating excellent cuts).

I''ve seen a few ACAs from WF (slightly smaller size at 1.2) and the H&A patterns there are flawless. I could purchase the diamond and look for a similar setting like the Danhov S100 but this will cost me an extra thousand.

Any comments / suggestions are much appreciated!

GCAL image is not make to show hearts image, so you will not see anything as crisp as that from a H&A viewer.

That said, BN SI stones generally perform well, just no way to tell if it is a H&A.

it''s fine. once you see it, it''ll blow you away.

thanks, that makes me feel a lot better!

You have done your due dilligence in the diamond buying process! More than most men do! Rest assured. And come back to post photos!

Hi ajmm

The diamond has excellent numbers and is about as safe as you can get without images, although there are no guarantees, the chances are it will be a superb stone.

With the GCAL images, I can''t see them that clearly unfortunately in order to judge overall cut precision necessary for h&a diamonds.

Thank you for the very qualified response, Lorelei.

To the OP, you are asking basically two questions.

1. You wonder whether you got a dud. Based upon the basic numbers provided, they are excellent, and it is safe to say that this stone is not a dud.

2. You wonder if the stone is a H&A, and whether you should have gotten one instead. With the info provided, it is impossible to say if the stone is an H&A. Whether you should have gotten a H&A instead depends only on your personal preference. Only you can answer that question.

Live long,

Very pretty ring. Congratulations.

I’m a little late to this thread but I’m confused. Did GCAL and/or Blue Nile even claim that it has hearts and arrows patterning or are you just assuming that it should because it’s a round stone in their ‘signature ideal’ collection?

no, they did not make such a claim. i was mistakenly looking at a magnified photo on the gcal certificate and was comparing this image to idealscope images i found on whiteflash. but i was told above that these images can''t be compared, and that i''d have to put the ring under an idealscope to see if it has the h&a pattern.

It does look lovely
