Help finding cushion....

So I am beginning my search now for a cushion cut diamond and I am having problems locating one I like. I am looking for something in the .80 to 1ct range (closer to 1ct the better). I have been looking on all the forum sponsors sites but I prefer the settings on james allen's site (the vintage section is right up my girlfriend's alley). I found a few diamonds on there but honestly I'm a bit lost on what to look for compared to a round diamond. I really want to do something different for my girlfriend and love the look of the cushion cut. Budget wise, I'm trying to get the entire ring done with setting for $3500-$4000. The few settings I am looking at are in the $800 range but I could always go with a cheaper $400 one if it meant I got a better diamond.

Thanks in advance!

Meh, mushy in the middle under the table.

I'd pass on that one.

Here's an option, if you can stretch your budget by a couple hundred:

PLEASE BE SURE THE RECIPIENT IS COMFORTABLE WITH WARMER COLORS

1ct, L color, VS2 - August Vintage Cushion

Here are a couple more options (both within your budget after Pricescope discount), if you are unsure of comfort level involving warmer stones:

.718ct, F, VS2

.722ct, G, VS2

I agree. After looking at it again it is blurry in the middle. Thanks.

Gypsy's suggestion here looks like a winner.

Perfect square shape and great light performance.

Have GOG put a few stones together with this one and shoot a video. Then choose the one you like most!

Thank you! I really like both of the .90 ones you found but I am concerned about the table and depth. I have always bought a round diamond so I am not an expert with regards to the cushion cut. Should I be concerned about that on either one of those?

I noticed that 1.08 carat one also! That looks like an incredible deal except for the cloud in the front. I did chat with someone from james allen and I asked the person if it was eye clean. She stated it should be fine but that it would take away from some of the diamonds luster (the cloud that is). What can I do to check on this diamond further? Ask for a report? Honestly that would be a great deal if it was eye clean.

I can branch out to other sponsors or sites but I really liked a few of james allen's settings and not many from the other sites. At this point I just want to get the right diamond and I can worry about the setting later or get it from somewhere else if I have to.

Edited.

Those are great also!

Cushions are nothing like rounds. You shop by faceting and light performance. BUT those 90 pointers and the 80 pointers ARE VERY DEEP STONES. It's the facet pattern it requires depth for performance. That's why they are in your price range. They face up small for their carat weight as a result. That doesn't mean you can't buy them. You buy the performance. But you need to make sure you understand that. Please make sure you check the measurements of a stone. with cushions since there are no set numbers an 80 point stone can EASILY face up larger than a 90 point stone. So the 80 pointers might be BIGGER than the 90 pointers.

You buy cushions by dimensions not carat weight.

Then pick 3 of the stones I posted to you. Tell them you want the gemologist to evaluate them, and also ask for an ASET. Which you will post here when you have them.

You also need to ask the gemologist to CAREFULLY look over the inclusions of the I clarity stone and tell you what he sees. If that I clarity stone is safe. I would have it shipped to you and see what you think as long as the ASET bares out. Because you are right, it could be a steal. Then you can ship it back for setting.

EDITED above.

Just to show you what I mean.

This stone is 75 points. It measures 5.15 square. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11556/

This stone is 90 points. But very deep. It measures 5.2 x 5.14: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.90-carat-e-color-vs2-clarity-sku-276013

So they are the SAME SIZE practically speaking. BUT one weighs more.

So you REALLY need to pay attention to dimensions of cushions.

I did see that rocky posted some BGD cushions. Those certificates are quirky, the stones are square but the dimensions make them sound rectangular. They are not. The one number (the larger of the two) is the diagonal measurement of the stone. So it's really the smaller number that gives you the length and width.

I'll throw in my 2 cents....I just purchased an August Vintage Cushion from Good Old Gold and it is hands down the most beautifully cut diamond I have ever seen! You can't go wrong with AVC

What range of colour grade would be a warm buttery yellow in cushion .

MNOP is light yellow tint.
QRWYZ are yellow.

and JKL ?

J is near colorless

K/L/M is faint.

JKL is warm creamy white so ivory, or bone I've heard it described.

mm that sounds good , It only looks that way in cushions correct because in JKL in Round brilliant looks awful to me but i guess thats because of the brilliantered facets which go well with the icy white effect , i guess you need larger antique style facets to get that ivory effect.

I attached two files now one Y-Z cushion and a J colour.

I've seen some GORGEOUS J and K round brilliants. And I mean STUNNING ones from WF and BGD. Over 2 carats too.

Maybe you just haven't seen the right ones?

And I'm not someone who likes RBs.

A well cut stone will always look nice I guess Im just colour sensitive, however I love the warm creamy look of some of diamonds by laurels cushion cuts and want that Cream or Ivory look but its hard to judge the colour without seeing it in person .

It really is. Best thing you an do is attend one of the large PS GTGs or go to a PS vendor that has a lot of selection and sit and enjoy (make an appointment and explain why you want to come in).
