I picked up a new diamond yesterday its all very lovely except Ive just been ring my nails over edges of diamond and can feel something almost like a nick! this isnt mentionned on the diamond report anywhere and more worryingly to me when my nail finds a purchase on it I can slightly move the whole diamond round in its four claw setting!

Should I be worried? should I call the jeweller or is this a normal phenomenon?

no, not normal, especially being able to move the stone in the setting. Get the jeweler to check it out.

Having the stone move is not normal, as to the nick it may or may not be significant but what I would advise is to stop wearing the ring and consult an independant appraiser ASAP. I checked back and it is SI2 clarity for your diamond, is it graded by GIA? It might be an inclusion you are feeling or a natural, check the report again but I would definitely seek independant advice.

Hm on closer inspection of diamond report there are two semi curved lines that run parallel near edge of diamond but these are marked as internal flaws not external but could that be what I can feel?

Where can you feel this nick, is it on the outer edge of the diamond or across the facets or table? Sometimes feathers can be felt if they break the surface but this is pure speculation on my part, an expert that can inspect the stone is the best person to help you.

its on the outer edges and it is tiny - I cant actually see it or feel it with my finger tips only when I run my nails across it

Are you sure it doesn''t say something like " natural" or " indented natural" on your grading report? These are often marked in green on the diagram.

nope no green marks anywhere on report but the red curves do reach the edges

Im tempted to take it to a local jeweller have a look at

In terms of movement its literally like a mm movement

I am so bummed I have had a jewellery nightmare these last few weeks

Because diamond are so hard, moving it will be like moving a saw, it will cut through your prongs in no time which is why it needs to be tighten ASAP.

Ditto, this also needs fast attention to avoid losing your diamond, also which type of lab report does this diamond have, is it GIA?

Its AGI and was written on 16th jan 2010

Sorry, CLEICS do you mean GIA or IGI please?

Sorry to have to bring this up but those "two semi curved lines that run parallel near edge of diamond" on the plot of the grading report may be feathers.
Feather is a nice word for a crack.
Astonishing as it sounds, many diamonds have cracks.

They are usually not a problem especially if they are just internal.
But let's just say a crack does not make a diamond any stronger there.
It is possible you knocked the diamond in just the right way that made the crack spread to the edges, so the diamond chipped away at the feather.

Take it in to get it looked at, or get a loupe and look at it yourself.
(If you don't want to buy one just go to a store that sells them and use one on your ring.)

Even if it is chipped your insurance may cover a replacement.
No insurance? All's not lost.
You may be able to get it recut by a good cutter without too much loss in weight and may even end up with a more beautiful stone if you send it to someone like Brian Gavin.

Hi No its definitely AGI (Im in the UK)

with regards to chipping it I didnt get a chance to do it myself as I only picked the ring up the day before and literally wore it home in the care - Ive had a damn good look at the ''nick'' and its no where near the feathers and sort of looks like a bit that hasnt been quite as polished as the other edges rather than damage if that makes sense? So Im feeling slightly better about it although still annoyed it wasnt reported anywhere!

My main concern now is to get the stone tightened

Ok thanks Cleics, I am not familiar with this lab. Get the stone tightened up and see if you can get an impartial opinion on this nick, it might be nothing but do get it checked. When you say it sounds like it hasn''t been quite as polished as the other edge of the girdle, that sounds to me like a natural, this is a little piece of the diamond''s original '' skin'' that has been left on, these can help increase carat weight. Look to see if there are any other areas like it. But I am again only speculating, an expert that can see the stone is what you need.

Cleics

Is this your replacement ring, the one that the jeweller made for you after he/they damaged your original engagement ring?

That is really bad luck, I am feeling so bad for you right now.

Let us know how you get on.

I am a new member from the Uk and follow all the uk stories with interest. I hope this is resolved to your satisfaction asap.

Good Luck.

Thanks yes it is the replacement stone! I am absolutely gutted and feel like shouting WHY ME!!!!!!!!!! The worst thing is I have used this jeweller before and he has been great but after this experience I never want to use him again! Its not that he hasnt been trying to help its just I now dont trust his judgement! Am tempted to get a different jeweller to look at my ring

That is awful. I really do feel bad for you.

Go with what Lorelei has said and get an independant to look at it asap. The difficulty for us in the Uk is where to find one. Perhaps a different post and ask fellow uk ps''s for options.

That said your jeweller has been more than helpful in this matter and I do think he is should be given the right to fix the problem before it gets out of hand. If you have used him in the past and been happy it would be unfair of me to assume that he hasn''t been fair during this process.

Perhaps Lorelei could suggest which should be done first as far as the following are concerned

1. notifying the jeweller of the issue.

2. seeking independant advice

3. having the setting fixed.

etc etc

Good Luck!!!

Here are 2 UK appraisers, if they aren''t conveniently located they still might be able to help.

You could get another jeweller to look at the stone but it is preferable to get the opinion of an expert that does not sell jewellery if possible. But whatever you do, you need to get this stone secured before you wear the ring again, firstly I would notify the jeweller of what you have found on the stone, see what he says and verify with a second opinion.

Hi all

An update - I spoke to ''my'' jeweller and another local jeweller that I trust and bought myself a 10x oupe (they are good fun!) also looked at my diamond under 30x loupe and it has 2 miniscule indented naturals, one of which falls slightly onto the girdle (it is tiny and would not cause a safety issue) and another that sort of looks like a dimple again teeny even under magnification that runs sort of parallel but further up on upper girdle facet just in from the outer angle if that makes sense. The only reason I can even feel a thing with my nail is because im almost feeling the flat bit between the two dimples (I cant feel anything with my finger).

Having looked, measured, and looked again I am now happy with my diamond as the indents are each probably less than 0.1 of a mm and are eye clean. (The second jeweller although happy to confirm the indents was amazed Id even spotted anything). My jeweller tightened my setting and has offered to write me a guarantee that should any damage occur to my stone as a result of these indents that he will replace it for free

I feel a lot happier but I am a little confused as to why there was no mention at all on the report although perhaps this is something to do with them being eye clean (?) Ive contacted AGI to ask why they didnt list this inclusion and Ill be interested to hear what they say

In short my stone is beautiful and Im once again happy. The indents, now I know they are ''safe'' no longer feel like an issue although who knows whether ill change my mind in time?

i though indented naturals were shown on GIA certs?

Hi my stone is from AGI so waiting to hear

It should not move at all in the setting! That worries me more than anything.

Hi Sone no longer moves at all - my jeweller tightened the setting and its super rock solid!

OK, just read the rest... do get that guarantee in writing from the jeweler, just to be sure. AGI may be a small lab and so may have their own methods of clarity etc. grading. Let us know what they say!

Thanks will do and I will post some pics of my ring when i finally work out how to shrink the pics to size!!! it genuinely is a lovely stone and a very good SI2 I do feel like Ive probably given everyone the impression of some cavity stricken rattly stone when it honestly is very pretty I have a few diamonds now and this one does hold its own in terms of fire and eye clarity
