Yes, I am long of post as well -- is there a PS award for that?

I have wondered how Karl managed to string enough words together to make full sentences and publish several full-length articles! He must have a ghost writer

I just don''t understand why everybody thinks I have problems with obstruction.
I just had obstruction issues with the EightStar.

Most of the other diamonds just looked too white for me, that is my major problem.

The nicest fire I''ve found was generally in shallow diamonds.
Some had broad arrows, other had tiny arrows, but most of the diamonds I loved had longer star facets.

But what I wanted to do was tip the balance towards directional brightness with the steep pavilion combined with min obstruction from the long lgf% and no under table leakage. Doing that and leaving good fire is the challenged.
I don''t understand this thing about directional brightness.
In Antwerp I saw a lot of pavilion heavy diamonds that didn''t leak but that didn''t have fire. Those diamonds were only white.

Hi, Stephan, I am anxiously awaiting photos of your new diamond!

In the meantime, I have realized from reading this thread that I know very little about star facets. What is the difference between long (which QueenMum likes) and short star facets? QueenMum, what is it about longer star facets that appeals to you?

I know where to find the star facet number on AGS and GIA reports, but that''s about it. Does anyone have any nifty graphics, charts, etc., that explains the role of star facets in diamond performance?

Thanks!

Hi Sara, I don''t know more than you!
I only know that longer star facets also make the upper girdle higher angled.

But how does it affect performance? I really don''t know.

Deeper pavilions are more directional, they return white light in a smaller cone.
If you go to far you only get white light.
But if you balance the contrast right and keep the off axis fire then it can be good.
The trick is not going to far and finding a balance.

There is no one answer to that the main difference is in the upper girdle angle more than the stars themselves but it depends on the pavilion angle the lower girdle angle and the table size.
The longer stars can make a bit of a difference by opening up the pavilion mains to more light but the difference that makes is tiny.

Yes, that was my feeling.
How deeper the pavilion, how less fire a diamond will have.

With shallow diamonds, I''ve often noticed a strong fire under strong lighting.
I don''t say this works under diffuse lighting of course.
That''s one of the reason I highly respect the HCA.

I think that what will help the fire in the diamond that Karl did choose for me is the very nice distribution of tiny black areas (head shadow) all over the surface. Am I wrong by thinking that where black meets red, fire might happen under strong light, and in this diamond, black meets red a lot of times?

This is really interesting, though. Another example of the complicated relationship between facets. Even my husband, who has a barely measurable interest in jewelry, thinks it''s amazing that something as small as a diamond can be cut so accurately and with so much attention to how each facet affects the other. A well-cut diamond, I should say!

Most of the people here in Belgium only care to know if it is a diamond or not, cut doesn''t exist for them.

As for the diamond I want to order, if nobody has something negative to say in regard to an eventual ''lack of fire'', I''ll reserve it tomorrow. So don''t wait to criticize it!

LOL Karl.
As I can''t sleep, I wanted to post one more question:
In the past, when looking at round diamonds with 44% or more pavilions, I almost never noticed blue fire but the only color that was visible was orange fire (what I find very uninteresting).
To my eye, blue fire was always much more visible with shallower diamonds.
Will this new diamond have all colors of fire in it or only ugly orange?

It''s so strange you say that. I find Blue to be the most common color in my e-ring stone. Like 80% of the time. When I see reds or oranges, i get excited.. lol
my stone''s a 34 crown, 41 pavilion.

I love red and blue fire but just don''t love the orange and the white fire.
My former 2.12 ACA I-SI1 (New Line with painted girdle) was the best red fire performer I''ve had.

impossible to predict.

So...did you place the order yet, QueenMum? Inquiring minds want to know!!

Perhaps this label can be stuck on the box?

Or this could go inside too?

I think I''d prefer the immediate gratification and satisfaction of hearing the dog chomp on the offender....but that''t me. We''ve been following your saga with great interest and are relieved that you have found a new stone. What a group these psrs are! I hope it arrives as you expect and has more fire than you could dream!
