Hello Atwater:
I read that platinum and white gold goes well with cool color gemstones, i.e., sapphire, emerald, and yellow and rose gold goes better with warm color gemstones... Then again, it really comes down to personal preference.

Thank you for the advice. The ring is done; I switched from yellow gold to platinum and I am very happy with the result.

East-west setting are a favorite of mine. DK set my blue sapphire in an east-west setting last year.
