I have been wanting a mothers ring for a few years. Both of my sons have January birthdays which is great because I do like garnets.
I've thought about a tsav center in a three stone with halfmoon sides. Both sons names start with the letter D, so I thought the halfmoons would be cool because they look like the letter D.
I also really love art deco bypass rings and like the idea of doing a bypass style with two asscher cut garnets around 5.5mm each.
I like greens, oranges, golds or red. I don't want pink or purple.

I'm really leaning more toward the bypass idea. I want the ring very art deco looking and bold rather than delicate. I'll link some pictures of rings I like the general style of.

So help me brainstorm! Would you pick a tsav and a mint? Or both stones the same color? I have my heart set on asscher cut and think I would need to have the stones cut. Any other color garnets I should consider?
Or do you like the original more traditional idea of a nice 1.5ct or larger center with halfmoon sides?

If you want it bold, why not play with more colours? I've seen tsavorite and spessartite (both garnets), mint and pinkish Malaya garnets, there's a lighter yellowish Mali garnet, pyrope might be too dark, tsavorite with rhodolite to name a few.

Thanks Chrono. I'm really open to any color combinations. I think I would like tsav with spress or tsav with yellow mali.
I think I'm leaning toward the tsav/spress combo a bit more.
Incorporating those colors together in one of the above combos, want do you think about the art deco styles? What size stones do you think would be reasonable size to enjoy the asscher cut without making the entire ring too large?
Would there be a way to still throw a couple of halfmoon diamonds in there?

Which cutters would be the best to inquire with for my garnets?
I was considering Gene@Precision, Dana@Mastercut, Roger Dery, Jeff White. Other suggestions fror cutters?

Unfortunately, I would not do an asscher cut for a tsavorite / spessartite combo. These material are not all that common anymore and tend to get pricey once over 2 carats. To get anything asscher cut means precision cutting and will depend on what the lapidary is able to source. I would contact all of them to see what they have available. If none have anything, then request one of them to get the stones for you. I don't think Gene takes requests. Jeff White does but he isn't inexpensive. I have not worked with Roger Dery and Dana.

TL's ring is very cool! I think the colors look fantasic together. I really want an art deco vibe to my setting. I really think square stones are perfect for the look I'm aiming for.

Thanks Chrono! I sent an email requesting the photo you suggested. When I get it I'll post for opinions.

I have a pretty sweet asscher garnet from GemRite. idk if John does custom cut gems but the asscher I have is beaaaaauuuuuuuutiful.

Of course I can't find any irl pics but here is the vendor pic... that is not even close to the color but it shows off the cutting really well. I have another asscher garnet that's pretty much the exact same color (again, not as represented by the image!) but way different cutting and it's super-interesting how crazily different asscher cutting can be.

I do think the two you found will work well though. I have two Gemrite stones, both garnets (the other one is a cushion tsav) and like them both.

Wow Distracts I love your asscher! I did have my heart set on asscher cuts. When I talk to Gemrite I'll find out if he can come up with something for me. I've been thinking about this ring for a long time and don't want to settle for anything. It's very symbolic for me.
I was also very strongly considering a setting very similar to your ering but with a tsav cushion or asscher center. I love my halfmoon idea but also adore bypass/twinstone rings. I absolutely want an art deco setting and will probably contact ERD once I decide which direction I'm going and/or find my garnets.

There are many different "asscher" cut designs ranging from something more traditional to those with more facets (modern looking). Jeff White cuts a more traditional design. It will be easier to get a single large asscher than getting two of the same size with complementary colours.

Well I got an email from John at Gemrite telling me that the Malaya I picked out is gone. Someone bought it this morning. He said he never had that happen before. Maybe it's a coincedence, most likely it was sniped. If the sniper is lurking my middle finger has something to say to you

Just as well, I think I'm going to explore the large single center asscher with sides. Perhaps I can find a pretty antique bypass to satisfy that itch. For now though I want to concentrate on my asscher.

If I do a large center stone what size do you think I need? 2 or 2.5cts and at least 7mm? What do you think would be the most beautiful color in that size? Does anyone have a tsav in asscher cut?

Draw out 7 mm, cut it out and "wear" it on your finger to decide if that's the right size for you. As for a tsavorite asscher, I've only seen one and I don't think I'll ever see it again. The colour cannot be the preferred medium dark or you will not be able to see the windmills and steps. Not only that, the cost of that material is ridiculously high at the moment, surpassing $1000/ct these days for a smaller stone. There seems to be less options too.

Good suggestion Chrono. I'll make a cut-out. If I don't go with tsav what other color of garnet do you think would look beautiful in the asscher cut? Is mint hard to find these days?

Good mints seem to be a rarity these days too, especially those with a blue tint. Other than that, there are so many different garnet colours. There is yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, blue and green, with everything in-between. That's one great thing about garnet is that there's a colour for everyone. For an asscher cut, anything that isn't dark will be pretty.

Roger Dery has an asscher tsavorite, but it appears to be quite included. You could ask him if the inclusions are less prominent in person or if he has any other material that would be suitable for an asscher.

Peter Torraca has an interesting color-change garnet that I probably wouldn't use in a bypass (it's on the larger size), but perhaps the 2 colors could be thought of as representing your 2 sons? I'd set it north/south with trapezoids or tapered baguettes (I'm not seeing it with half-moons, but maybe you might?):

I was just trawling through the sites and reading about Woofmama's bypass ring idea. Then it dawned on me - to my complete and utter horror - that I was the one that bought the garnet from GemRite  . I honestly didn't know you were looking at it - I actually bought two the same from him (you can ask him if you like) - a smaller one for a ring and the slightly larger one for a pendant to match an existing pair of earrings. It was a coincidence and I'm so, so sorry if it messed up your plans for your ring. I'm utterly mortified. :((

Well things like that happen some times I guess. I'm happy it wasn't a sniper. Woof: I am liking your planned design better anyway!
