2 x matching baguette cut white diamonds or white sapphires with dimensions of either 5x2mm or preferably 6x2mm.

It's an unusual size and I've searched all my normal suspects but can't find anything! Help please!

I know that Michael E has custom cut sidestones in white sapphire before. You could shoot him an email.

Ooooo thank you! Will do that now!

hi ld,

my jeweler told me that long/skinny matched baguette diamonds are very difficult to find, especially if you want decent quality in clarity which is usually important with step cuts. she advised that it is usually best (and not ridiculously expensive) to have them cut for you. the baguettes in my sapphire ring are 6X2, 5X2 and 4X2!

Thank you very much for the information. Did you get yours cut for you by any chance?

I spoke with Michael E and confirmed that these will be problematic to source and may not be cost effective to have cut. I THINK I may have found somebody who has some but am waiting for them to respond.

Appreciate you chiming in (and love your ring)!

hi ld,

i just went through my old emails from my jeweler and stand corrected; my baguettes are 2.5 mm wide.

she also explained that cutting long, thin baguettes is technically challenging and that to get good ones, you need to go to a baguette cutting specialist (who knew they even existed?) anyways, mine are E/VS+ and were cut in tel aviv. in case you are interested, the 5 mm ones were about $800 and the 6 mm ones were about $1800 (a huge jump in price due to the challenges of length). pls keep in mind that i am in hong kong so we pay for ridiculous markups on these sorts of things ...

good luck.

Slksapphire,
Glad to see you back, not just for your presense, but so that I ogle your beautiful ring every time you post. Does that mean the baguettes in your ring were cut to order?

ETA
Cross posting but just read that your baguettes were indeed cut to order. And those are mighty expensive baguettes too!

hi chrono,

living in hk, i think the markup is at least 50% more than "normal" (u.s.). sigh.

also, i decided to go with E color which really isn't necessary (i wanted it to match my engagement ring) and i'm sure that drove up the price quite a bit, too. i don't think it would have been a good idea to go lower than VS clarity, though.

i actually had my jeweler show me about 10 sets of pre-cut "matched" baguettes but the sizes were kind of funky and they really weren't well matched (esp. since i had to find 3 sets of stones). since this was a very special ring for me (the only piece of jewelry i own other than my wedding set and a 10-year anniversary gift), i splurged a bit and had the baguettes cut. guilty as charged.

Oh my goodness! I'm really shocked at the cost but I would think it's going to be high no matter where I go for these. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the guy I spoke to comes through otherwise I may have to get a big hunk of rough out with a knife and fork and see what I can come up with!

Really appreciate your thoughts slksapphire x

LD - Just out of curiosity/learning, why did Michael E thing they would be problematic to source and not cost-effective to cut? I'm assuming you asked him about white sapphires rather than diamonds.

He said he wasn't able to cut them and that it would be challenge finding a cutter willing to take on a project with such small stones. He was incredibly helpful though and told me that Stuller's have 5x2mm but they're $500 each. Actually I understand why it's going to be difficult because there must be very little profit -v- a heck of alot of time to cut tiny stones.

I'm still waiting to hear back from a couple of sources but if not I may abandon this design altogether and go for something completely different - quite organic - based on an antique ring I inherited.

It's so :(sad

ld, just to clarify (after your last post about the stullers), my 5X2 custom cut diamond baguettes were $800 for the pair, not individually. not cheap but looks like it was cost effective vs. the stullers.

Sorry, LD, I confess that reference was a bit obscure. I wasn't actually calling you Joe (although it might be in sync with some of the recent threads, lol). It is a baseball reference, supposedly said to player Shoeless Joe Jackson by a little boy after he heard that Joe and six other players were accused of throwing the World Series some time in the late teens/early 1920s...

Okay, complete and utter threadjack over!

Aren't 6x4 mm baguettes going to be way too wide? I used to own a 6x4 mm emerald cut diamond and it's a completely different look from what I envision for your side stones.

Have you ever heard of gemhut?

I'm sorted now - thank you Preg. They're sitting in a gem jar next to the Tourm and I'm deciding whether to risk setting it or not. It's going to be a 3 stone as opposed to the 5 stone I had envisioned previously. Thanks for your help and thinking of me. x

I am sending you loads of dust that the tourm does not break. That has got to be one of my favorite stones in recent memory :))
