Long time lurker here. :wavey: I'm looking for an engagement ring stone and have decided on an asscher. Based on the great reviews on this board, I've contacted GOG and they're sourcing three stones for me to compare. I thought I'd post my buying experience and also ask for your opinions on the diamonds they've called in. Skip down to the pics if you don't want to read about the buying process. :-)

Buying process
The process started with me emailing GOG last week with my requirements (budget, stone numbers, etc.). I received a response the very next day from Matt. He said he could only call in a max of 3 stones at a time and gave me a list of 5 to choose from. I choose 3 stones, all 1ct G with varying clarity (VS1, VS2, SI1). The price difference between the VS1 and SI1 is $1000... I figured that would give me a good spread to choose from.

Two of the stones came in on Saturday. Matt sent me an email on Saturday morning with some photos and his initial opinions. Now here is where I was really surprised... he said that he was extremely impressed with the performance of the SI1 and he thought it wouldn't be worth the trouble to bring in the VS1. He had just recommended the least expensive stone out of the three! You don't hear of that very often.

Me being the thorough person I am, I insisted on calling in the third stone anyways. It should arrive on Tuesday and Matt will be shooting HD video for me to share with all of you. I'm really excited to see the video and can't say enough about my shopping experience with GOG so far.

Now the fun stuff... help me pick the stone.

Stone 1 - 1ct G SI1
Table Size: 57.6%
Depth: 68.2%
Crown Height: 12.8%

Stone 2 - 1ct G VS2
Table Size: 56.9%
Depth: 69.8%
Crown Height: 19.7%

Stone 3 - 1.05ct G VS1
Coming on Tuesday...

Any initial impressions/opinions are very much appreciated.

#1 looks terrific and I see why he recommended it! I wouldn't have considered SI1 for an asscher, but this looks like a nice one!

Can you give us the diameter measurements of each stone?

I like the windmills of the first one.

If it's eyeclean I'd go for the first one for sure. It looks lovely.

Weird, I'm not able to edit my original post. That was my main concern about the first stone as well... it being a SI1. According to Matt @ GOG, it's 100% eye clean and even at 10x the inclusion(?) is hard to pick out unless you know where to look.

Here are the stats:

Stone 1 SI1
l/w: 5.61 x 5.59
crown angle: 30.7%
crown height: 12.8%
pavil angle: 37.6%
pavil depth: 52.2%
table size: 57.6%
depth: 68.2% / 3.82mm
girdle thickness: 3.2%

Stone 2 VS2
l/w: 5.55 x 5.54
crown angle: 43.3%
crown height: 19.7%
pavil angle: 36.4%
pavil depth: 45.9%
table size: 56.9%
depth: 69.8% / 3.86mm
girdle thickness: 4.1%

Both are nice squares. That first one has one of the prettiest ASET images that I have seen! What is the price? I am not sure the 3rd stone coming in could be worth $1k more than the first one.

the first has fat windmills, a nice shape.

I can honestly tell you I wouldn't hesitate to buy that first one. I really would just buy it, if I were you.

#1 - and ESPECIALLY if Gypsy - the resident asscher goddess says so - I'd take that one for sure!

Very nice stones you have had GOG find for you!

The first one is $4800. I agree, the 3rd stone coming in would have to be a lot better to warrant the price difference.

I'm leaning that way too.

I have just started to look at asschers so I defer to other PSers on which is the best one with numbers, but I have to agree that my personal preference for looks is an asscher with big windmills. #1 is stunning

There have been a lot of asscher posts in the last few days! It is more challenging to find good ones than rounds, that is for sure!

The third stone arrived today.

Here are the stats:
1.08 ct G VS1
l/w: 5.64 x 5.63
crown angle: 40.8%
crown height: 19.0%
pavil angle: 35.0%
pavil depth: 47.9%
table size: 58.2%
depth: 69.8% / 3.93mm
girdle thickness: 3.0%

vs1clarity2__i.jpgvs1_aset.jpg
vs1_ltsc__i.jpg

And video of all three:

What's everyone think? Which one is the best out of the bunch? Does the VS1 perform better than the SI1 to warrant the $1k price difference?

#1!

I still love the first one a LOT

Well, all three look gorgeous in the video! I still think #1 is the most perfectly cut of the three. I actually need a 1 ct. asscher myself for a ring I already have, so I am also interested in these stones and may choose one from your leftovers! But you get first pick, obviously! Let's see what the asscher experts here say!

I like 1 and 3. the windmills are better than 2.

Edited: I prefer 3 over 1, whilst it is eye clean for both of them, psychologically, the feather in the pavillion of 1 will bug me, even if it is microscopic.
Edited again: just saw the video link- number 1 on performance. that feather can blow away!!!!!

I still prefer #1. What is the spread on that one?

Thanks DS. Okay well, no spread difference either. I'd say go for 1 or 3.

And since it is GOG, have Jon do a video for you, and pick the one you like best from that.

did you see the vid thats already posted Gypsy?

Looks like the consensus is on number 1. I agree, that stone really "shines" in the video.

However, something is drawing me to the pattern of stone 3. I can't explain it. Does anyone else think so too, or is my untrained eye playing tricks on me?

Hopefully Karl_K will chime in on this thread as well. I'd like to get his take on the stones. :)

Tom, what kind of setting is your stone going in? I do hope Karl sees your question as well. Although, I am not sure he can comment on stones that are identified with a particular vendor. You have some comments by some very knowledgeable people on this thread already, though.

I have a conflict of interest doing business with gog and try not to respond to gog threads unless specifically asked or if I need to correct something.
Both 1 and 3 are good. 2 isn't that bad but the other 2 are better.
1 and 3 have different personalities or looks if you prefer and it would not be unusual for someone to be drawn more to one than the other.

I was 70/30 between #1 and #3... for something like this I wanted to be 100% sure. All of your feedback on the stones helped me seal the deal on #1. :D

Thanks everyone for the help!

Congratulations!!!! :appl: Please come back with pictures of the ring! What setting have you chosen?

Now I have to start the search for a setting. I'm looking for a split claw solitaire setting. Not sure if I want to go with a pave or just plain shank. I was thinking something like Vatche's 1503 or BevK Split Prong Solitare w. small side diamonds.

I may just get a temp setting and have my SO pick the final one.

I'm open to recommendations. :)
