Help me pick out a gemstone present to myself

Hi all. I''ll be graduating from graduate school in a couple of months and my grandparents are giving me a grad present of $1000 that must be spent on something fun for myself, not towards student loans. So naturally, I''m thinking jewelry. I have small diamond studs already, so I''m thinking a necklace or a band-style ring (so as not to interfere with my future line of work or overshadow my engagement ring). Almost all of the jewelry I current wear is diamond or pearl, so I''m thinking something with color this time. Unfortunately, I don''t know much about colored gemstones. Anyone have any suggestions about where I could find a gorgeous gemstone necklace or ring for about $1000? Thanks in advance!
