Please help me choosing between these two stones:

1. https://myapps.gia.edu/ReportCheckPortal/getReportData.do?&reportno=1149082423&weight=1.27
Carat weight: 1.27
Cut: Ideal
Color: J
Clarity: VVS1
Price: $6,800
Fluorescence: None

2. https://myapps.gia.edu/ReportCheckPortal/getReportData.do?&reportno=1149044477&weight=1.21
Carat weight: 1.21
Cut: Ideal
Color: I
Clarity: IF
Price: $8,000
Fluorescence: None

I am concerned about the color, I am not sure if it's yellow to naked eyes for J color, and if it's worth to pay $1200 more 1 color higher??? Please advise.

Thank you in advance.

These need pictures/Ideal Scope and someone who can look at them first if you are shopping online.

Is there a reason that you are going for such high clarity? You could up the color and lower the clarity if you wanted. It's safe to go as low as VS2 and not see inclusions with the naked eye, many SI1's are eye clean as well. People tend to notice size first, color second.

You are paying not only for the colour difference, but for an IF stone, which is a very big upcharge. I tend to agree that if a stone is eye-clean, that's all I need. You might be able to stay at an I an go bigger if you were willing to go to VS or SI. Between these two, I wouldn't take a J without Fluorescense (just my preference).

I sat in a room with I and J diamonds a few days ago. From the top view, I could not tell the difference between the J and the I (by the window, in a cubicle type setting, and in a bright white room with white walls). From the side view, the tint of the J became much more apparent to me (not by the window... but it did in the bright white room and in the cubicle type setting). I was also viewing 1.5 - 1.8 carat stones however... the tint seemed much less noticible in smaller diamonds (1 carat).

Personally, I *probably* wouldn't mind a J if it was set very low or in a basket setting where the side view was less noticible. However, I think I would have a problem with it in a tiffany type setting where the side view is more exposed and the diamond is set high.

I hope this helps.

My final recommendation... go see a few in person. It really does help. :))

Over in the SMTB part of PSforum, there is a "helpful threads" topic (a sticky) and in it are several links to threads of I, J, K diamonds. It's not an exact representation b/c white balance varies from camera to camera and tints look different on different computer screens. But it will give you some approximate idea.

Personally, I find J too tinted for "the" e-ring but might be okay for a RHR or antique ring, or whatever. But I can see tint in F and G, too, and I readily see it in I color diamonds. Color is one of those things that you can train yourself to see, either accidentally or deliberately. Most people can start to see tint at the I color range, though. But I never noticed it until I hung around PS and started to study my diamonds more critically.

Every one is different. I just got an ex cut stone in J and I have to say it faces up very white ( at least to me) I don' t have a lot of diamonds and I am not color sensitive. Even in bright light from the side it is still white enough for me. I could not be happier. It allowed me a bigger stone. I will say I did go with a VS2 as I did not want to see any inclusions, and I don't. The above link helped me a lot.

Hi,

I wouldn't get either of those. You really shouldn't pay for VVS1 or IF!!! I've found a few to consider...

This first one after the PS discount will cost you $5,600 and is a 1.1 on the HCA scale which means it's performance is excellent and it faces up pretty white for a J:

Here's a comparable I color stone that scored a 1.7 on the HCA and after the PS discount will cost you about $7,100:

If you like these and are open to other options (other than the ones you have), I'd put these on hold ASAP and request idealscope images. JA just updated their website so now you can see a video of all of their stones. The absolute best way to buy online and they're one of our top vendors.

Here is the link to the HCA if you are interested. https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca It's used as a rejection tool only, used to narrow down long virtual list of stones. Stones scoring under 2 ( up to 2.5 in some cases) means that it is worth investigating further. Finding a stone that scores under 2 does not mean that the stone will be an ideal performer it simply means that it's worth gathering more information such as idealscope images, ASET, sarin reports etc. It's a fantastic tool and does it's job well if used correctly.

In my opinion, I personally think that an "I" and "J" stone from the direct top view look absolutely the same, when you compare 2 ideal cuts. The difference can only very faintly be seen from the side in the pavillion.

As others stated, you should drop the clarity to VS2 or SI1 and get more bang for your buck!

Thank you everyone for your opinion. I'll go with the I color. I looked around for SI1 and VS2 but the price is about $500 difference.... so I decided to choose the I color. Thank you Christina, I plugged in the numbers on the table, and they came out excellent for all.
