I have an opportunity to have my wedding rings re-set. I wonder which "look" you think is best.

Right now, my set is: engag diamond is a 3.05 ct, transition cut from the 1920's, VVS1, J color round diamond. It is in a 2.20 ct Henri Daussi halo with VS diamonds H-I color. I have 2 bands with diamonds 1/2 way down 1.30 cts each band VS diamonds H-I color. These rings are all soldered together and are VERY VERY VERY heavy & thick on my finger. They are so thick I usually just wear a 2 mm white gold band and NOT these rings. I am not a huge fan of melee and though these diamonds are decent sized, I find the setting to be busy. Also, I fear the setting makes my ring look like a cluster ring and my vintage 3.05 center deserves more respect & face time than that. Right?

What do you think about this: keep my engag diamond and have it set in a 3-stone trellis setting with plat heads and an 18 kt rose gold shank and thin (less than 2 mm) rose gold bands on either side or just 1 rose gold band as a WB. My watch is a beautiful 31 mm 2-tone Rolex (SS & rose gold), so I love the mixed metals. I would make the engag ring a 3 stone ring and put 1 ct diamonds on either side of my 3.05. I'd have the color match and at least VS clarity. The cut would be RB, not tranny for the side stones.

I would LOVE to hear what you think. Keep in mind, this change would not cost me a dime. BUT, I am clearly going from an almost 8 ct set to just over a 5 ct set, but with MUCH bigger stones. Also going from solid plat to plat/rose gold.

Thanks!

Thanks Nielseel! I hadn't considered a 5-stone just because my center is large (over 9 mm) and I want at least 1 ct on each side. That being true, I've run out of finger width. : )

Do you prefer the 3-stone look to the halo???

I think that maybe the three stone would be a little more classic and timeless.

I think the reason you think your current looks like a cluster is the setting's melee is quite large and that the center stone is getting lost, at least to me. I think my preference when doing a halo is for the melee to be quite small and serve as a more supporting roll. I think the same could be said for the size of the stones in your two side bands.

That being said if your where to switch your setting to the three stone, I think then you could use one of your current bands as a wedding ring and it would look ok.

I hope this makes sense.

As for mixing metals as you can see by my avatar I LOVE the look.
Good luck

I far prefer a 3 stone to a halo. Im actually turning my current ( fairly new  ) ering into a pendent and getting a colored stone 3 stone e ring because soooo many people have halos im already bored haha.

I had a feeling your stone would be too big, but i just love those so i had to say it. I think it would be stunning

THANKS for the feedback! I am feeling justified in my original thoughts and I am very appreciative of your perspectives. As you guys said, with a wedding set, you want a timeless look. I don't like busy sets with lots of small stones and as it turns out, I don't like busy sets with lots of not so small stones either. I love my center and I want to showcase it more. Keep the comments coming! Any advice appreciated. :appl:

I think the main problem with the current ring is the 2 bands soldered on. It is just too much. A delicate halo can be quite beautiful with one thin diamond wedding band. There are many examples here, but here is a recent 3 ct example.

In order to put your stone in a setting without a halo, you need to know that it doesn't have a very thin girdle that might chip. Many old cuts do. You can have the girdle worked on if it is, but you need to do that prior to getting the diamond reset. I like 3 stone rings but I would definitely not put modern round brilliants next to an old cut stone. I'd get someone like Adam at Old World
Diamonds to find a matched pair of old cuts to go with your center stone,

Thanks again guys. Well, I did it. My new ring is being made. I traded the platinum halo set in and am having my 3.05 tranny center stone set into the rose gold & platinum trellis setting. I was able to afford these side stones: 2 x 1.01 ct, VVS2 RB Excellent Cut in a color matching my center stone. I worried about the different cuts because of the good advice on here, but really, the cuts looked great together since everything else about the stones was such a close match. So, I am going down from an 8 ct blingtastic set to a more classic 5+ ct (3) stone set up in rose gold & plat. My H is very happy about this change. He said my other set was ostentatious and mugger bait. I think my new set will still be VERY nice, but with thinner bands on the back, I can flip it around to the palm of my hand if I am in a less desirable part of town. I will get my new ring on 2/15. Again, thanks for the help!!!

Hopefully those side stones will look good together. I cant wait to see. And 3 big stones is much more blingg that an 8ct halo, and yet its more understated.

Thanks! I will post a photo once it is ready on 2/15. These 9 days are going to be L---O----N-----G!!!!

:appl: Good for you Vicky! :appl:
I'm glad you found the sidestones you were looking for & that the reset is underway. I have a feeling you're going to love the clean lines & simple elegance of your new set, with the perfect amount of eye-catching bling!!

Thanks Roxy! I am excited. I think it will be much more comfortable to wear AND I'll be able to see my center stone better. I just wish I could make time move faster. HA

Late to the thread but your reset to a three stone sounds AMAZING!! are you going with BGD? it looks like one of their pics... very exciting! Can't wait to see the finished product - hurry up Feb 15!!

Wow, sounds great!!! You've had a chance to see the stones together, and you like the look so in the end that's all that matters! I think your 3 stone is going to look elegant, classic and yet still blingy and substantial - I can't wait to see it!

Thank you! I would love to be able to work with BGD but I had a "trade up" deal with my original retailer. I think BGD designs are very classy and elegant and modeled my ring after theirs. I hope it turns out like I want it to! Again, thanks.

Thanks junebug. Yes, I saw the stones together and I am hoping they look like I imagine once set. I can't remember if I posted the photo of the stones in a line, but if not, here they are! Thanks again for your feedback! :appl: :appl:

So???? Has it been delayed :?

Eta haha how weird we posted at the same.time

I saw that post, vickigigi... and that is HORRIBLE!! I don't seem to get a positive feeling that they are willing to do much to correct things. I had a bad experience as well and Gypsy was very helpful with how to deal with my B&M owner. Stay firm, stay positive, don't engage in 'back and forth' just state what it is you want corrected - and repeat over and over! ... or just get your money back and your diamonds/stones and start over. That's what I did and how I ended up with my BGD 3 stone.

I hope it ends well for you - I know you want to support local (I'm in agreement with that, too) but sometimes, its just not worth the risk. It wasn't in my case. It was a huge fiasco. I'm sorry you are going thru this issue - it is not fun and totally sucks the life out of any excitement and enjoyment you had about the new jewels.

HUGS to you!!

i had a very similar experience. I had a local jeweler make my e- ring, I was really certain i wanted to keep my money local and they assured me they could give me the finished product i was after.
this was the picture i have them, and the end result

Luckily for me, they sold the brand I wanted to go with instead, so it worked out, but I can say, they messed up once, I wasnt go to trust them with my time and money a second time.

For you, sounds like they messed up on a couple of rings. So they had a few opportunities to demonstrate their skill, and they didnt deliver. :((

Personally I would go and express your dissatisfaction, point out specifically and clearly what construction issues are there, and request a refund.
