Good Morning!
Sorry for the length of this but I feel I need to explain it all! I really need some help picking a "size" for my rings.
I dropped off my e-ring and band to be re-sized yesterday. They are both currently a 5.25 (15.9mm diameter)....which would be fine if they were being worn individually on their own, albeit a BIT snug in this warmer weather even putting on, but together they just feel too tight. I detest when my ring(s) feel tight, just as I detest constricting clothing (no turtlenecks for me, thanks! I am not fond of loose rings either, but I have some tricks and I would rather loose than tight.
I told the jeweler yesterday a 5.5 should work for both rings but now....I am second guessing myself. I called him this morning and he said they have not started yet so can do either a 5.5+ or a 5.75 no problem...up to me...but he does not have any 1/4 sizes to try on (never mind the "+"'s!) I told him I would get back to him this morning. When I was originally sized by several jewelers (during the winter), I was told anywhere from 5 to 5.5....but of course those were very narrow sizing bands and jewelers tend to promote that "snug fit" I do not like!
I do currently have a wedding ring on my left ring finger. It is a size 5.5 and I have been wearing it now for almost 4 months - all day except for sleeping and some of my athletic activities. My knuckles are larger than where the ring sits but it slips on quite easily. It will not "shake off" unless I my finger is really wet and slippery from soap and I REALLY have to fling my hand around! In winter/cold it is rather loose...but I just stick a strip of moleskin/flesh bandage on the inside back and it does trick even if a mild inconvenience (1-2 layers depending on HOW cold!). I wear it alone, but the front of it is about 8mm wide but there is space between the sides...so basically there are two 1mm pieces of metal that join in the middle where the stone is and there is space where you can see my flesh otherwise (breathing room!). The back of the ring measures 3.5mm and is solid. When I was in Vegas this past weekend and finally had some hot weather, my finger swelled quite a bit - I had to strip off the moleskin (we came from a colder climate so it was still there) and while it was not TERRIBLY uncomfortable where the ring sits I could not get it over the knuckle without a lot of effort (and DH helped me with his own saliva...what love!) and I did not want to put it back on after that. Knowing how hard it was to get over knuckle was uncomfortable for me! I had this irrational fear it would just get tighter and tighter!
My new rings are about 3mm each. I am not soldering them together. I will however wear them together MOST of the time I wear them. There are time I may wear just my wedding band alone since I am rather physically active, but not TOO often. So together, they are 6ish mm.
These are not rings I want to get re-sized often as they are 3/4 scattered flush-set diamond bands so I am trying to figure out the best solution for now and long-term. I don't have issues with fluctuating weight and such (very athletic) but I am conscious that pregnancy, illness, etc can affect ring sizes too and those are more realistic concerns for me. Of course weather too...I live in a climate that can vary from around -30 C in winter...to +30 C and over in summer.
What would you do?
1. Size to 5.5 (about 16.1mm diameter/50.3mm circumference) and accept they just may be too tight at times (this would mean I would not wear them sometimes which is not really my preference....I do know that ONE on its own would fit though for sure and even be a loose at times bringing out the moleskin trick or ring snugs)
2. Size to 5.5+ (about 16.2mm diameter) having no idea if this would make a HUGE difference or not? Would it make enough of a difference? I know that wearing them alone I will definitely have to do the moleskin trick still, especially in winter.
3. Size to 5.75 (about 16.3mm diameter/50.9mm circumference). They will DEFINITELY fit together though together they may be slightly loose together in summer and quite loose in winter. Anytime I have tried on a 5.75 sizing ring in stores they have been big enough to slide off my knuckle (they were narrower though - 2mm or so). They will definitely be very loose when worn on their own. With this option I could also consider adding sizing beads. I suspect they will be too large - however I don't know how much wearing two rings together affects the tightness of rings? Is a full 1/2 size bigger TOO big?
Thanks to anyone who managed their way through that!
