Hello!
I am trying to find to buy a good quality cushion cut stone. Pink Sapphire, Rubellite maybe even Ruby (open to suggestions on others too!)
I would love recommendations of places to buy from, people who could source one.

The colour is important. I would like a raspberry / fuchsia pink stone.
Cushion cut.
Preferably largeish! (4 carats)

This stone is to go into a very special ring to celebrate birth of my first child. He was born 6 months ago and I haven't had much luck finding a stone like this (and also relied on a jeweller who didn't find one either and seems to have given up!)

I really appreciate your help. Very happy to share photos of the ring when it's set!

Thank you in advance.

Kate

Hi Kate! Welcome!

What is your budget? Could you post a picture of the exact color you're looking for? Do you have an idea of dimensions that you want rather than just carat size?

That would help us out a great deal in knowing where to start! There is also a thread that is stickied at the top of the Colored Stones forum that has colored stone vendors, if you'd like to start perusing there!

An answer already!! Thank you. Sorry for not including this additional info!

Budget, 5 - 8k.
Dimensions .8cm - 1cm

The colour. Attached are examples of the colour pink (not the sort of stone!)pink_stone_4.jpgpink_stone_7.jpg

How exciting for you!!

I just looked on the following site fine water gems...some lovely colours in the spinels
http://www.finewatergems.com/spinel.html

My other piece of advice ( which was given to me when i joined on here!) is to perhaps email (include a photo of the colours you like) some of the precision cutters in the recommended vendors list and ask them if they have any pieces similar to what you are looking for. They often do not have all their stones listed. Some of the custom gem cutters may have rough which would be suitable to cut a design for you. I did this and ending up having a stone cut especially for me which makes the ring feel even more special and unique.

I had really good help from the following people on my "quest" ...you can google them!
Jean noel Soni - top notch faceting
jerry Newman - Gemart services
Lloyd forrester- clearcut gems
Dana Reynolds - master cut gems

How often do you plan to wear the ring? Do you have a setting in mind for it already? (Trying to figure out what stones would be suitable hardness-wise!)

For example, tourmaline wouldn't be a good every day ring, but spinel and sapphire/ruby would do ok every day.

This has some cutting issues (window, potential bowtie) but it looks to be close to the color, and might work for the size you're wanting. $4,140

This one has some inclusions, and I can't quite get a read on the color because it's reflecting the camera (dark facets in the stone) but it's more elongated. Those inclusions might be eye-visible too. $1,950

8ct spinel. The dark spots are reflecting the camera. $5,684

6.06ct spinel. $4,545

You will probably be priced out of rubies....This one is smaller than ideal, not your desired color, cutting issues and $14k.

These search parameters are pretty difficult because of the large size, the color, and the cushion shape. Oval would be easier. I'd probably stick to looking for sapphires and spinels for every day (or close to it) wear, and tourmalines/rubellites and garnets for occasional wear.

Sapphires are going to be really expensive, rubies even more so, because of the color/size thing. Spinels are probably more attainable. But it's unlikely that you'll find either of those precision cut because of the size and availability of the rough.

Tourmaline and garnet will be much more likely to be found with a precision cutter, and much easier on the budget.

I'd probably go for spinels for size/budget/color parameters. You can tell from the above that those are mostly what I found.

I searched AJS, Multicolour, Forever Gemstones, Swala Gem Traders, Artistic Colored Stones, Precision Gem and GemCal looking. Maybe Pala? But then you'd have to contact a jeweler for the price.

I hope this is somewhat helpful!

Somewhat helpful?!! Super dooper helpful!! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, give advice and search for me.

Your suggestions were excellent and with the range of stones found I now feel like this ring is possible afterall.

I would like to wear it often so a spinel looks like the best option. I do have a setting in mind. Reasonably simple. I had purchased a $20 ring that I have always wanted to be real. Picture attached

My eyes have been opened since coming onto this forum so I think I'll seek advice on that too when it comes time.

I am so excited.

Oh and definitely needs to be cushion. I tried on all the other shapes and cushion looks the best on my fingers! (they're my husband's fingers in the photo above!)

Bright pink is my favourite colour. I wear it often so the colour has to be the same as the colour pink I wear (so none of the pink / purple or the pink / red stones would work)

I know that makes it hard!

Thanks again.

By cushion do you mean square cushion or can it be rectangular? Freke has done an excellent job compiling potential candidates for you. If you think you will not be wearing it every day, then as Liz said, you may want to consider Rubellite as well. There is a really pretty, almost 6 carat, old material emerald cut rubellite that is for sale on one of the FB groups. I did not bother to post photos because its does not sound like the right shape or material...but if you change your mind, I'll gladly post it for you.

Also, more pics of your ring would be helpful, as its hard to see a whole lot of detail from the current angle... :praise:

Sapphire (and ruby) are automatically out of the running due to budget constraints. Tourmaline and garnet are out for durability, which leaves spinel. I'm not sure if you are looking for a perfect square or rectangular cushion.

However, even a spinel at the size and color the OP wants, will be a challenge to find... :blackeye:
