I am looking for a wedding day gift.

I was thinking about either a nice sapphire blue ring or a diamond necklace. I tend to like a little lighter sapphires than darker (but obviously not too faint).

I would think about getting a estate piece as well.

My budget is from 1,500-3,000.

I thought this was kind of nice: http://www.newyorkestatejewelry.com/necklaces/4.25ct-diamond-necklace-/18370/7/item but I am not sure I love the flowers.

Any suggestions on sapphires or necklaces out there for purchase now (event coming up in about a month).

Thanks!!!!

And..Thank you once again!!!

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

The difficulty with getting something ready made in a specific design is that you will be limited in choices and the sapphires are likely to be of commercial quality. Add that you only have a month makes this an even more challenging task. It will be easier to get a diamond piece over a sapphire piece. I suggest taking a look at Etsy for ready made pieces.

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

Chrono,

I have two followup questions.

(1) It is too short of a time frame to buy a sapphire and have a local jewler set it in something simple? I did that with the e-ring and it was quite quick (I want to say less than a week). I also live in Houston so I may have whiteflash do the setting and they work pretty quickly.

(2) Any suggestions on Etsy for people who make nice pieces?

Thanks!
Ori

Diamonds are very easy to find and buy but not so for coloured gems. The pickier you are, the longer it takes, sometimes up to a year or more. The issue isn't with the setting but finding the right stone. What sort of quality are you aiming for?

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

I am not that knowledgable about coloured gems yet. I have looked around the site for a quite a bit but I having a harder time to learn than I did for the diamond ring. I know my budget and would like to get as nice as I can for the budget. I am not sure if that is a helpful answer

you say you are near WF, so maybe they'd have one of these ready to go>

Its just by personal opinion but that necklace you shared is a bit old fashioned and not something i'd wear.

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

It is indeed far more difficult to learn about coloured gemstones than diamonds. It is all about colour, which can at times be subjective and far less so about cut. Even if you understand the breakdown of colour (tone, hue and saturation), there's the matter of how attuned your eyes are to these factors which even the slightest nuance affects pricing. There is no formulation or easy method to pick up on how to evaluate gemstones.

Let's suppose you are looking to get a blue sapphire ring for $3000. How much would you put aside for the setting? Once I have that number, I can look up options for you.

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

Probably spend quite a bit more on the stone than the setting. I would guess around 400 or so for the setting. I would also be open to suggestions on some of the better ways to set sapphires.

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

I don't know how traditional of a necklace that you wanted, but a year or so ago I went into jewelsmith (Durham NC) and there was a gorgeous necklace made of briolette sapphires, all different colors. I can't look at their website on my work computer, but they may be able to make something with less sapphires in your price range.

But I thought it was beautiful.

Gemfix has a few nice ones at the moment. I chose the round below because it is very easy to set and gives you many options. It is also a decent size at 6.5 mm
Andrew Gulij of Gemfix - www.gemfix.com

You are limited by time, hence I only looked at US based vendors. Nothing else jumped at me from the other vendors.

Do you see any nice ones that are a different cut? I gave her a round solitaire for the engagement ring so I figured maybe I should do a different type now? Do you have any other suggestions in a different cut? Maybe a emerald, oval or cushion.

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

I did a bit more soul searching and now I am pretty sure that I will go with earrings. I thought the ring would be nice but I am afraid because I just 10 months ago got the e-ring (a nice 2+ carat diamond).

Can you suggest which earrings you would choose right now? I am looking to purchase soon because of the timeframe. I would like them to be about 1carat each if possible?

Thank you so much!!!! SORRY about changing mind.

You are in the Houston area? Well, you are in luck!

The International Gem and Jewelry Show (Intergem) will be in Houston for the weekend of April 19 - 21 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

I have never been to one, but I'm thinking about going to this one.

You can google: intergem to learn more.

I'll see what's available later tonight. Emerald cuts are rare but oval pairs are very possible.

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

Chrono. I am looming for round pair. Sorry if I was not clear. Thanks so much again!!!!

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

Two different pairs.

First pair is 5.5 mm but the colour is very rich and they are well cut. 5.5 mm is about the minimum size for me personally for earrings. They are around $2K which leaves you $1K for the setting.

Second pair is 6 mm but aren't perfect. The colour is a very bright blue but is slightly windowed. If you bezel them, I am quite sure they will "close up". Considering that you get an increase of 0.5 mm per stone and costs $300 less, if you are on a tight budget, I would consider these.

Basically, if you are looking to prong set, I'd get the first set. If you are looking to bezel set, I'd get the second set.

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

Those top ones are beautiful. I feel like the bottom ones are too light. I am a little worried about size being that much under a carat each. I really would like to get closer to a carat but still maintain the colour. I could up my budget for the sapphires and reduce for the setting. Do you have any that are larger that you think are worth getting?

Like I said, I know this may mean I need to up my budget.

Thanks!!!!!!

Re: Help Wed Day Gft - Blue Sapphire or Diamond Necklace -1.

Nothing popped up in Palagem's search engine so it looks like I'm stuck with Gemfix. I did not bother with other vendors due to time constraints (most are in the UK or Thailand).

These two are larger and still within budget but not as well coloured. I find the top pair to be more attractive.

Thanks Chrono. I shipped three and figured I would keep the one that I like most in person. You have been very helpful!!!
