Hello my friends,

I've been on PS for a very long time yet this is my first thread. Everyone here is so knowledgeable and friendly and hopefully you can help me.

I'm in the process of buying a three carat pear shaped Tsavorite. I found it last month and due to one thing or another, it has taken quite a while to finalize the deal. Unfortunately, having too much time leads to too much introspection and I am questioning my judgement.

The seller has been extremely forthcoming, sending lots of pictures and videos and answering all of my questions. The problem is that they don't offer a return. Normally this isn't a problem and if the deal had gone through in the first week (completely my fault that it didn't) then I would have it now, for good or bad. The color on my monitor is amazing and the sparkle in the videos blew me away. As I said, too much time is not good.

My question is about the window in the stone. How can I know if setting will close it up? Is there a certain type of setting that will work better than another? Thanks so much for any help you can offer.

Suzanne :wavey:

I can’t answer about whether or not you can close the window in a setting, but as someone who hopes to own a large tsavorite one day, I just wanted to say that I’m loving the shape and color of this one. Good luck!

Thanks Goldie_locks! I really love the color as well. On my phone the stone is more saturated and my jaw dropped when I saw it.

As for the window, I'm getting up there in years and can't see too well anymore:lol: so seeing it at arms length might close the window anyway...o_O

I have to say that I really had to zoom into the first picture to see it there - so maybe that's a promising indication that it would be less noticeable in a setting? I really hope some others with more experience will weigh in for you. Do you know who you would have set it? Perhaps you could ask them their opinion?

I have a 4 ct mint tsavorite with a slightly larger tilt window like that. I put it in a very enclosed halo setting, and the tilt window doesn't bother me at all.

Here it is in the setting, tilt window included, but I think the enclosed setting helps.

Do you think it's a tilt window? It seemed to be straight on...I would love it if that's all it is.

Oh, and thanks for your reply...

It's hard to tell from your photos, but if it is a straight on window, it's very small. It's all about what you can accept. Any tiny form of window will drive some people crazy, and then there are others that are willing to forgo a small window, or even a large window, for a particular stone.

For example, i have a stone with the worst cutting in the universe, and a huge window, and I get compliments on it all the time because it's a neon paraiba with color that overcomes the cutting issues.

I guess it's give or take and what you can accept. Because there is no return policy on the stone, you have to be 100% sure.

I think it is an awesome gem; the tilt window I feel will not show much once set as you will not rotate the gem in the mount like you do in your fingers. I see good reflection from the culet area when faced up; so angles look correct. The only way to get away from tilts from the side is to put more breaks in where you feel the tilt will occur to disrupt the light or windowing effect and normally it is on the larger gems you see this more frequently.

In my ole opinion that is the color I seek in a Tsavorite garnet as it will still have awesome green light return even in candle light or low light situations ... That one and one like TL's mint is to me more lively and I like a gem with life and activity.

Very nice gem Tsavorite...

I think it’s a stunning gem. I’m not an expert on windows, but fwiw even looking very critically at it, it’s truly beautiful. The size, color and quality are dominant visually to my eye. I imagine that wearing it would bring a lot of joy!

What a beautiful gem! I see a tilt window- but that is not uncommon in gems and I don't see (from the first pic) a significant window.

Hi TL. I can't see the window on your stone at all!
I'm also thinking about a halo so it's a relief to know it will probably hide what window I have.

I'm also starting to think I'm over thinking everything...

Gorgous Tsavo. Very nice shape and colour.

If you return it please post the vendor...

If its the same one I think it is, it may have originally come from Nomad.

Hi Dana, Thanks so much for your reply. What do you mean by putting more breaks to disrupt the light? Breaks in the setting?

I too like the color and sparkle in the stone. I am very excited to have it in a ring.

Hi Bluegemz! I hoped you would chime in! I'm very excited to get the stone and from everyone's replies, it seems the window is not an issue.

As an aside, I went to a gem show today an spent way too much time looking at jade bangles. All your fault. Fortunately for my wallet, my big hands don't fit the usual bangles made for delicate hands.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I really love the color and shape and committed to the stone immediately. Even when I was told about the window (I didn't see it on my own:shock:) I was sure I wanted it. I just wanted some additional reassurance from people I trust. Plus, like I said in another comment, I'm getting old and seeing the ring on the end of my arm is difficult, much less seeing a tiny window...

The color is absolutely gorgeous and certainly that’s what people will be blown away by!

Very beautiful and sparkly! It’s a lot belying color too.

I too, think its a great stone - love chubby pears, and the hue and saturation are lovely (thought I posted this earlier, but it didn't make it somehow).

Thanks minousbijoux! I'm waiting patiently for the deal to finalize. I'm over the moon that it's going to be mine. I've made a few large (for me) purchases before, but this one has been a real roller coaster, all of my own making. :boohoo:

Once I have it, I'll start a setting thread. I don't have the faintest idea what to do with the thing. I saw a recent post where a tsavorite halo had an uneven color and until then, that was what I planned to do. Not sure now.

Anyway, thanks again,
Suzanne

Thanks Chatoyancy, I'm so pleased you like it!
Suzanne
You’re welcome!! It’s gorgeous! Please excuse my odd typos from my previous post.

That stone made my jaw hit my keyboard. Absolutely gorgeous! And chubby pears are my favorite!

You guy have overwhelmed me! I had no idea I would get such a reception. I love the stone and absolutely adore the color but had no idea there would be such a response. I only posted to ask about the window and damn, at this point, who cares about the window?? It seems the color and saturation trump any window, and from everyone's reaction, I think i did good...

To give credit where credit's due, my vendor picked the stone, and bless their wicked little heart, they are the one who deserves all the praise...one day I'll tell the story, but not yet, not yet.

Hi Suzanne2 :wavey:

The breaks are in the facet pattern. A break is where one tier of facets intersect with an adjoining row of facets. It is a " break " in the facet pattern that disrupts light and will distort the optical windowing. Many times I will add that extra row in the area up about 30% from the culet to help eliminate the tilt windowing effect.

I hope that all makes sense

Hi Dana,
Yes it makes a ton of sense. Faceting is a strange and wonderful world. Thanks.

The location (not centered) makes me think that it is a tilt window. Really can't tell about the colour as it looks "soft" on my monitor. The shape is beautiful and if the colour is superb, I can easily overlook the tilt window in the right setting.
