Help with setting (w/ round halo, vintage, rose gold) Canada

Hi all,

Like most new posters, I've been lurking around trying to fill my brain with your knowledge, and have hit a bit of a roadblock. I'll try to keep this short.

I need help determining how to proceed with figuring out where to get a setting made (or where to get one from).

This is what I have narrowed down: my gf likes halos, she prefers round to square (she doesn't like cushion as much as a regular round), a combo of rose gold and white gold would be nice (I personally want to go with a rose gold halo with a white gold band), she's not picky about having a brand name designer, and she's a quality over quantity type girl (let's all make the joke in our heads and not type out the obvious one I left dangling there!). She's also nuts about vintage style bands.

She has been out looking at rings with her gfs a few times, and has kind of decided she likes elements of a bunch of different rings. She likes the Tacori 2639 basket, she likes the simon g MR2133 halo itself (she saw this one in store and liked that simon g uses a more 'pink' rose gold than copper rose gold she has seen in the past) and then she's found a bunch of vintage style bands online she likes. I get the sense that if I could have something made that combines all these elements, she'd be over the moon.

I'll post some pics for reference of the vintage style bands she likes (note- ignore the fact they are varying styles of rings, the pics I'm posting is purely to show the detail work that she likes on the bands. I don't know what it is called other than 'vintage'. Also, I stole these off her phone, so if you know their source for me to look at, that'd be appreciated!). The Simon G (showing type of halo) can be seen at http://www.wherethediamondsare.com/images/products/larger/MR2133.jpg

So, what I'm hoping to get is some ideas on whether there are any designers out there who do bands in this style.

I've been to a few local jewlery places in Calgary, but everything I've heard leads me to believe the premium I will pay for buying a diamond+setting locally is too much to offset the supposed benefits of buying local (getting to see ring while its in progress, having in person discussions regarding style, etc). That said, I know nothing about importing a diamond ring, dealing with American diamond co's while I'm in Canada, etc.

Budget is $10-15k. Once I get the idea of where I should be looking to have this setting done nailed down, I will start looking at actual diamonds, unless you guys have advice on the actual process that you think would work better for me.

Thanks in advance!

BevK settings may be a good place to start for that style - GOG carries them, for example. www.goodoldgold.com
Also you may enjoy browsing www.antiqueengagementrings.com (Leigh Jay Nacht) for ideas --- may not be what you are describing, but it gives you that vintage feel you are showing above.

Custom halo would be worth checking out ERD & DBL with in your budget. (Engagementringsdirect.com and diamondsbylauren.com)

I'm also in Canada (Ontario) and if you are purchasing and shipping from the US, you'll have to pay the taxes only. In Ontario , it is the HST only of 13% and I think that still makes if far less expensive than purchasing here in Canada. If you go thru a PS vendor, you will get a much better quality diamond and setting, than some of the local ones, IMO.

I agree beverly k seens like the best bet. Good old gold sells that so you could get it all taken care of with one stop. Aslo you could get one of there vintage style stones too

http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry-designers/beverley-k-jewelry/rings/176PP1/

I like this one. And they are pretty good with changes to there stuff I bet they would add a few diamonds down the side like your first pic

I guess I should ask the dumb question - do companies like good old gold or whiteflash do full custom pieces, or only customize existing designer settings?

Both do full custom work.

I believe white flash and brian gavin diamonds do full custom, but you should really contact them with whatever questions. engagement rings direct also do custom

Re: Help with setting (w/ round halo, vintage, rose gold) Ca

Not a dumb question. If you want to go full custom I'd contact edr like enerchi suggested. If you want to adjust or tweak a beverly k than I would go with edr. Give beverly k a chance though. They have a million designs and are happy to tweak. Go look at there website not a great website but youd see.

It would be cheaper than custom and they are very beautiful. Leaves more money for the stone.

But if you did go custom some designers do better vintage styles than others. Thats why I like edr

Thanks Nielseel and everyone! Lots to consider now!

One last bump to see if there are any other suggestions.

I don't knkw how expensive they are but I would alao contsct singlestone

Re: Help with setting (w/ round halo, vintage, rose gold) Ca

For a vintage custom design, I would stick with Single Stone if you are willing to go for a smaller diamond as they are a bit more expensive. I have also seen ERD do some nice vintage pieces so that may be worth while. If you want to focus on the diamond, I would give mydiamondzone.com a shot.

For the actual diamond, I think you should try to find a true OEC. Start with OWD or JbEG but ... are you brave ... I would totally go on eBay as well. I recently returned a 2.1 ct I VS transitional cut that I paid $12,000 for ... still a bit sad ... but this is the pricing you can find on ebay ... and lots of people have found cheaper.

Hi Morgin,

I'm a fellow Albertan so I can relate to your struggle finding a great rock and setting at a reasonable price. Like others have already said, if you buy a stone in the US, all you'll have to pay at the border is the GST. My BF and I just did this a couple of months ago, we bought a diamond from jewelsbyericagrace. Now, for the setting, custom is great because you can get the look you want. I considered this however one limitation is that if the setting needs any work post-purchase, you may end up having to ship it back and forth to the States. Personally, I wanted a more convenient way of maintaining my setting so we're going with an authorized Tacori dealer. That way, should there be a problem with the setting in some way, you can go directly to your jeweller, have face-to-face contact, and have them repair it (most times) on site. For what it's worth, Tacori can do some alterations to their settings at a price. Also, to keep this in perspective, this is my first foray into fine jewellery so others may have additional insights into the process when it comes to Canadians buying from the States. One final point, find a jeweller you trust. I didn't have a jeweller I trusted until I started trying on settings. There was one store in particular that we kept visiting and they now know us by sight and I've taken other pieces to them for work and been pleased (e.g. restringing pearls).

Good luck!

Re: Help with setting (w/ round halo, vintage, rose gold) Ca

Is the detail work called "filigree" or is it 'miligrain'? I'm not sure I understand the distinction between those.

Re: Help with setting (w/ round halo, vintage, rose gold) Ca

Thanks maccers for the tips! I was going to PM you to ask for the name you like but I can't see a PM feature, so if you are comfortable sharing and its not against forum rules I'd be curious!

Re: Help with setting (w/ round halo, vintage, rose gold) Ca

Morgin, There's no PM feature on PS but I don't think it's against forum rules for me to share the name of the store. It's Crowley's in Edmonton. They carry Verragio, Tacori, Simon G etc. Keep in mind, I can't speak to their custom work but their customer service has been great and they've been very accomodating and patient with us. They held a Tacori trunk show in the Fall and they were offering US prices on the settings which was great. We didn't order our setting then but I believe they were going to honour the US pricing for us anyway. I can't confirm that because my BF has taken over the setting process, he may or may not have already ordered the setting. Because we didn't buy the diamond from them, there is a setting fee but the fee is nominal compared to what we saved ordering a diamond from the States. And, in case you didn't know, Tacori doesn't really ever get discounted - it's kind of like Toyota, their pricing is their pricing.
