I'm looking for a nice orange garnet to be paired with amethyst in a birthstone ring. I'm total newbie and looking at the lit non site saw a hessonite garnet which seems a nice colour. I've been looking for a spess but now wonder if I should be looking for hessonite as well. Please educate me; what's the difference between the two?

They are coloured by different minerals, one by calcium and the other by Manganese. I find that Spessartite tends to be a little pricier but also has nicer colouration.

Thanks Chrono. Do you have both in your collection? I have been looking for a Loliondo spess (I like yellow as opposed to a red orange) but I wonder if anyone has a side by side comparison.

I've been collecting spessartite, ignoring the poor hessonite since few look really good to me.

I have had some in the past, but believe I've either given them away or sold them. They also go buy the nickname of "cinnamon stone" since they often pronouncedly brownish red. If you are looking for something on the yellowish side, Hessonite would not be my go to stone.
