Hilaria Baldwin. (Alec’s wife). Have you been following this?

Looks like she deleted it. It was crazy. Maybe just search Hilaria Baldwin at Twitter and read the bits and pieces you can find.

TLDR: she was born in Boston to US citizen parents who eventually retired to Spain, but she has been having an on off accent and saying she was born in Mallorca and didn’t move to the states until she was 19 etc.... just created a more exotic personality for herself... it was really odd...

Well... I’m not surprise. Celebrities are an entirely different species. They live for the limelight. They will do anything to get it. Even lie.

Had no idea she is that young. Tbh i thought mid 40s.
Super confused by what she did & her response.

I did google this.
Only thing I can come up with is ..... Odd..??

On the other hand I know a lot of bilingual people and everyone is so extremely different regarding their mother tongue ... I know people who still have a strong accent at 85 in spite of having moved at 19 years old. I know people who seem to have switched completely and now have a strong accent in their mother tongue (interestingly most of them emigrated to the US).

Or people who fall back into their accent when they have spoken to family back home... So it's nothing I've never experienced...

I feel like this was mentioned somewhere and I immediately forgot about it. All I can say is oof lol.

Sort of reminds me of Dorit from RHOBH.

I knew a girl years ago who spent a summer in London styling hair in a fancy salon. When she came back she affected the accent.
This went on for quite some time. Everyone just acted like it was normal...but I thought she was weird.

She was born and raised in Boston though

Yeah, but I have a relative who was born in the middle of Germany and emigrated to Pennsylvania in her twenties.
She now speaks German with a thick American accent.... It fades a bit when she's visiting, but on the phone it's super strong.

It fluctuates and she's not doing it for publicity    .

I am not saying the Hilaria -story is not Hilarious, though... lol

Maybe it started out like the episode of Friends where Ross did one lecture with an accent, and then he just had to run with it?

I lived 20+ years in Massachusetts and did pick some of that up. Not a lot but some and I think you really can't help but do so after a certain amount of time.

I had heard about Hilaria's accent and backstory some years ago. I mean frankly, whatever she wants to do is her business her history.

I still to this day get accused of "sounding white". so on the accent part, I kinda say whatever. its her business. On her growing up story? not my business either.

Hmmmm. Brings up the question of who are we really? I'm a Canadian now, but 5 generations ago my family came from Ireland. Am I Canadian now by birth, or the amount of time here, or both?? Is this cultural appropriation by Hillary or not? At what point do you become this nationality vs that? If you 'identify' as a culture, can you claim kinship with it? I wonder about all of this when I read stories such as these.

It seems as though she is a 'convenient' Spaniard, but I don't know the whole story so who's to say?

Hi,

She wanted to make herself a little different. I have nieces who sport an English accent and an American accent depending on which county they are in. They were born in the US and went to live in England at ages 10 and 12. One of them says she picks up accents easily. If she went down south or a while, her new accent would be southern.

Just a cute story-- One of those nieces used to take drama lessons and participate in plays in high school in England. She had a part that called for an American accent. So she tried on her American accent and felt quite prepared. She came home rather upset. The teacher said she did not have the American accent right. She did not have the nerve to tell the teacher she was wrong and just fumed at home. She ended up having to do it the teachers way, altough the teacher did not get it right. I was visiting at the time.

I am not bothered by this small allure she has tried to create around herself. No harm done. After all shes a celebrity wife. Needs to impress a bit.

I find it funny.
Honestly, it's kind of a non event. So, she spent summers in Spain and is bilingual...but was, and is, a rich New England WASP by birth. Her heart, it's with Espana! I can't tell you how many girls in my high school had all manner of affectations like this. It was common. I guess I'm feeling kind of :roll:oh-kay Bitsy about it.
*It used to be de rigueur for starlets to make up some back story so that Norma Jean from wherever becomes a Star!.

Yes, this is true and I also think it’s mainly harmless. I think it’s remarkable that she actually did the bit “how do you say in English?” About how to pronounce cucumber lol.

His video is also strange. To me, he should have said something like “I live in a world of make believe. I find it charming that my wife loves Spain so much that she wants our children to have Spanish names and be bilingual, as she is.”

instead, he goes all Kevin Spacey Christmas video on it.

Their kids are adorable.

Bwahahahahaaa.
Yes, the whole 'how you say' was laying it on a liiittle thick
Also, I always think of it as a teen thing to do. They usually drop it in college- at least the ones I knew did.

*Alec is a pure-d dink.
Just putting that out there.

Yes
I know people who came home from OEs speaking an Engkish3 accent
A freind in high school moved to Perth and within a very short amount of time sounded 100% authentic Aussie
I spent 5 months in South Africa living with South Africans and on my way home visiting my friend in Perth people asked if i was South African - it disapaired in a week
I can see how many Mrs Baldwin would pick this up but for such a long time ???
Sad when all she had to do was tell more of truth and she could have got away with it
Remember when Madonna had an English accent ?

If i moved to New Jersey id be doing all i could to speak like a local !
...not really the same thing

I grew up in the very rich Mexican culture and fawned over girls who looked more exotic. Me & another girl Samantha were truly the only white people in my elementary school and I got made fun of quite a lot for it.

That embarrassment of being "just" white carried onto my later years and when I was 13 & in eighth grade & just starting a MySpace profile I decided to create my own heritage and I started telling people that I was part German, Irish, Japanese, & Brazilian; (two of those are true haha.) Oddly the mix worked as I have always been told my whole life that I look part asian part white and my mother has darker skin that fooled my friends that she met into thinking she was the Brazilian one. I also tanned very well when I was younger and I'm sure it perpetuated it.

It went on through hs as I found it particularly difficult to get rid of until one day my best friend caught me when my own father was showing her family albums while I was in the shower. I came clean & I'll never forget that embarrassment!

I can definitely laugh at it now and since then I've found our Russian, German, Irish, & English ancestry to be quite interesting on its own!

So I understand someone being embarrassed of who they are especially when they've grown up in a culture whose ideal of beauty doesn't fit what you look like.

But girllllll....she's a grown woman!

Just my bff finding out felt like a whole world of shame, I couldn't imagine the whole actual world!

All I'm gonna say is if you do this sh** as an adult you better make it foolproof!

Me when I was little!
