I ordered my gown hollow to hem from a reputable bridal salon. When I looked at the contract I had signed, it said "size 4." The consultant did measure me, and I''m assuming she remembered all my hollow to hem numbers because she didn''t write them down as she went along.

So I''m totally paranoid, especially because I''m worried about the proportions of my gown since I''m 5''0" and the size 8 sample gown was made for someone much taller. I called the consultant and asked, "is it definitely being ordered hollow to hem? Because it''s not in my paperwork." She said, "yes, remember I measured you? It''s in my order form."

I emailed her the next day, asking for a copy of the order form just for my own records. In my head, I''m thinking, "what if she''s gone when my gown comes in June? I need to have it in writing that my gown is supposed to be hollow to hem." I also asked her a bunch of other questions, like suggestions for undergarments and a veil and BM dresses. That was Tuesday and I still haven''t heard back.

I''m going to call her today, but I''m wondering if other brides ordered their gowns hollow to hem and should it be noted as such in the contract? Am I being paranoid for no reason?

The good lawyer in me says it is very smart of you to want to get this in writing! Especially if you had to pay extra for the hollow to hem!

Let us know when you hear!

That''s the thing though, I didn''t pay extra for hollow to hem. She gave me a hefty discount and didn''t say hollow to hem is extra.

Grr. She is not there today.

Oh I see - well definitely give a call back if she doesn''t get back to you in a few days! I can totally understand wanting to make sure they get that right, and it''s just scary when it doesn''t say it on your contract!

Thanks PolkaDot!

You are not being paranoid. Wearing foil on top of your head to protect you from aliens... that might be paranoid. Since it takes so long to make your dress fit you "perfect", you don''t want to add to the stress of dealing with the dress shop. go back and get a copy for your records, what if she isn''t there in June?

I have definitely heard of issues with the hollow to hem measurement. Go back and get a contract with your measurements on it or call your credit card to dispute if they are uncooperative. And make sure that you are comfortable with the number they right down - what happens if it is an inch or two off either way? Can you change your shoe height or hem the dress (not ideal, but better than than an unwearable dress)

The contract I signed had all my measurements on it at the time of ordering and my signature again next to the size that I agreed to order.

You might consider not just your actual hollow to hem measurement, but how much shorter than the sample gown you want. For example, I am 5''10" and most gowns in sample size with a stated hollow to hem of 60" were about the right length for me in sock feet, but some ranged from 3" too long to 2" too short. Basically, on some gowns I needed to order extra length but on others I didn''t even though they all claimed the same hollow to hem.
