Honest opinion on redo setting...

I posted a thread awhile back regarding a reset on my heart shaped diamond. I had issues with the head and the shank the first time around. I felt that the jeweler just placed the head on top of an existing band, therefore, both parts looked like two different pieces from separate rings. Also, the pave styles were different as well. So, I went back and had them redo it. Do you think the shank is a bit thick or did I make a mistake to have them redo the ring? I'd like to get some feedback on what all of you think. Thanks in advance! :wavey:

for shapes like that I personally prefer bezeling so prongs dont take away from the shape, (as you can see my pear is bezelled too)

But thats jsut personal preference. I think the redone setting is better, the shank looks delicate but still more sturdy that the old one.

I like the thickness of the new version. It doesn't look too thick to me, I think it matches the prongs much better now. PLUS, everything looks gorgeous on your beautiful hands

IMO, the proportion of shank to prongs is much better now. I prefer this reset over the original by far.

I think it looks much nicer after the redo :)

Well, I think it looks fantastic now! I think your original shank was a bit too thin to be honest (JMHO!) and the profile looks so much better - I think your jeweler did a great job integrating the head into the band. The band and the head look more in proportion now, especially from the side view. I think your ring looks gorgeous!

I think it looks very pretty and delicate!

I think it looks much better! beautiful! The only constructive thing I may have to offer is that the prongs look a bit bulky to me, but *I* prefer thin delicate prongs, so that's just personal preference. It may just be the close up photos too. I don't think the shank looks to think at all, perfect really! I think it came together beautifully!

I prefer the reset. The band actually looked a little too thin before the reset, to me, the proportions look just right now.

Like everyone else, I prefer the reset. The original band was only practical for someone who never does anything - the smallest amount of stress would have snapped the head clean off! :o I think it looks lovely, but would like to see it bezeled to empasize the unique heart shape. The current bulky prongs suggest a trillant at first glance.

dont get me wrong, this is lovely and the reset helped volumes, before it looked like a head and a band, now it looks like one cohesive setting. But i agree the prongs take away from the heart shape. And personally i really dont like most heart diamonds, but I like yours, the shape loos really chubby an nice :lickout:

The tiffany bezet heart is my favorite heart setting, I saw a bezeled ritani i liked too. bezels on shapes like that just do it for me. as you can tell from my avatar lol

I really think the reset is much much better. I quite like it.

I think your new setting looks great. I really like heart shapes and think the new setting looks nice with it but doesn't overpower your diamond.

Love the redo! Don't like the original.

I do agree that the new reset looks better. I would also make the prongs look a bit more delicate.

Something like this?

Have you seen this design? I am usually not a heart person but this is one of my favorite heart shaped designs.

I am another voice in the crowd --- LOVE the reset! It seems much better suited and in better proportion between the head and shank. The band seems like it will be just as delicate but sturdier with the more integrated head mounting. I agree - before it did look like it was 'plunked on top'.

I do like Charmy's prong option - they look secure but still enhance the heart shape. If you leave it as it, it is still a GORGEOUS ring that is beautiful to admire!! Good work!!

I really like it a lot - it's my favorite heart shaped solitaire!

I too think the reset looks a lot better. You might have them shave down the prongs a bit they look a bit harsh compared to the heart diamond.

Cohesive - that's the word I was looking for! I think your jeweler did a fantastic job!

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I really appreciate it and it's good to hear that my redo was for the better. :wink2:

nielseel & justginger - Thank you for your wonderful suggestions. I love the bezeled look and will keep that in mind when I redo the ring in the future (which I know I probably will, but I shouldn't do it now as DH already spent quite some $ into this setting). ;(

Christina - Thank you for your feedbacks! I agree that the prongs look bulky and I would love to make them more delicate. Would you happen to know if that will be alot of work for the jeweler or is it an easy job? They charged us everytime we made changes so if it's a big thing, I may just leave it the way it is.

CharmyPoo - Thanks for the images. The two settings look stunning! I love the second one but unfortunately, my engagement ring has a halo so I wanted this ring to have a different look. I would love to make the prongs more delicate but I'm not sure if it's an easy task or not as I do not want to spend more on this setting. It has not been a smooth journey. :((

Hi,

Your new setting is lovely. Much better than the old setting. Enjoy your new ring!

Annette

Thank you, Annette!

Does anyone know if it's hard to make the prongs more delicate? I'd like to see if I should just leave it the way it is or take it back to the jeweler. Thanks!

In general it shouldnt be to expensive- but I dont know because f the diamonds in the prongs. But I think all they would do is shave down your existing prongs.

I think

The current prongs are a bit squarish which takes away from the curve of the heart-shape. I'd ask your jeweller if he can re-shape them (the top two, the bottom one seems ok) without affecting the integrity of the metal. I could be wrong but I don't think it would be a big ordeal (unless it's a stone safety issue).

ETA: I forgot you have pave on the prongs. This will probably make it more difficult for them to reshape the prongs. Sorry.

Well, I sort of think that if that bench you used was able to make more refined prongs, they would have.

I think it will take a whole remake of the head because of the way the pave is set. But only the jewelwe would know. Personally I would not use that jeweler again since s) they should very poor judgement in the first iteration of the design, 2) they charge you to fix mistakes, and 3) they do not appear to be skilled in delicate pave.

I really like the reset and would just see if they could soften the prongs a bit without removing the diamond. I wouldn't want to mess it up!

Thanks everyone! :wavey:

I have my hesitations as well because the jeweler did not do a good job in the first reset. I have to agree that I was relying on their professionalism (guidance) and they should have consulted with me the design and the process. They were so lazy in even creating me a rendering and a cast of the ring. I was quite disappointed with them and they keep charging me for those changes. If they have to make a whole new head then I'm sure it will be additional cost. I definitely would not recommend them or go back myself. The only reason why the reset was done there was because initially it was suppose to be done by my husband's client and then his business closed down so he outsourced it to this company.

Anyway, thanks for hearing me vent and for all the suggestions! I'm so glad for all the help!

I wouldn't take the chance of it getting messed up if you have doubts about it. It is fine like it is and the prongs will protect those edges.

I agree. Personally I'd leave well enough alone. I think the prongs are fine as is.
