This is the only pic I have at the moment. Its on its way from Lisa now.....

My honest opinion will be rather uncomplimentary, I am afraid. It is really dark - best to wait until you get to see it in person.

I'm actually thinking of not even having her send it......

That is definitely your choice. I know it would be mine.

I definitely like that pear cut - and the bright blue flame looks cool - but overall it seems like it would be a very dark sapphire which would not be to my particular preference.

Cameras do lie despite the old saying, hope it looks better in person. Best regards, Lee

Its a lovely shaped pear - very organic, well balanced - but the colour is quite dark. Definitely not one you'd want to bezel set. Are you having misgivings and second thoughts? Can you ask for subsequent photos in different lighting situations to get a better feel for the stone? I'd request that before having them mail it to you...

in the picture it appears way too dark. my fear is that it will even be darker IRL. however, it could just be poor picture taking skills. i don't know what the price tag is on this. it may be fairly priced for what it is.

So I'm back at the drawing board. Knowing how difficult it was for me to even find a blue stone in the size I need - I've given up on blue (still wishing) I'm realizing I'm not going to have much to choose from in my size in ANY color.
SO here are two pears from Lisa that I think I may like - though not sure how or if they will fit. Will these be too small?
The Umba is 9.65 X 6.58 X 4.58
THe spinel pear is 9.47 X 6.34 X 4.42
There is also a trillion spinel I like which would have to be an entirely different project. I like the color a lot but am afraid of what kind of mounting it would require (I need platinum or possibly palladium)
Can I get some opinions on these stones? And please if anyone knows of a pear sapphire or spinel or possibly tanzi in 11X7 - let me know =) =)

Maybe you could try a london blue topaz. They are pretty easy to find in calibrated sizes and you could get one in that size for around $20.

I found this one with a quick google search [urlhttp://gemsbydeni.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=6156][/url]

I've never bought from them, but I've seen them around on the web for a long time and it's an inexpensive item.

I just realized this post doesn't have a pic of the mounting...
Thanks Junke - I do like topaz and I already have a few. Trying to go with something different this time.

Oh..if it doesn't have to be a blue stone, what about a Colombian emerald? I do love a nice emerald. :naughty:

The spinels and Umba are MUCH nicer but will not fit your existing setting. :((

I don't want to hazard what a 11x7 emerald is going to cost, much less find in a pear shape.

I think the one in the photo is too dark.
I have to say, I don't think I often see too many precision cut pears, and 11x7 is a pretty hefty size. But I'll keep an eye out!

If it doesn't have to be blue, you could probably get a garnet cut to size. I know Gene at precisiongems cuts pears quite beautifully, and might have some suitable material.

Well here's an emerald =) Of course I know even less about emeralds than I already do about other gemstones.

I contacted Gene (thanks MTG!)- he's checking his rough to see if he's got anything.

Here are a couple of other pears from Lisa both Rhodolites
10.61 x 7.83 (I'm afraid that 7.83 will be too big - you think?)

11.34 x 6.25 (too narrow?)

prefer the middle rhodolite garnet - nice shape. Seems to match your setting very well.

I would not touch the emerald at all. I don't mind some inclusions but this one just looks dead, opaque and has distracting inclusions.

Colour-wise, my preference is the fat pear but I don't know if they will fit your setting. One is a little too fat and the other is a little to skinny.

what do you think of the color of this tanzi please? Do you think it will be very pale IRL?

I think I might be holding the perfect emerald for that setting... this seaform pear from Dana at Mastercutgems. I received it yesterday and am trying to decide whether to keep it. If I had your setting already, it would be a no-brainer. The stone has a nice pastal blue-green color, with a lovely glow. Looks good in all lights I've tried so far. Actually looks nicer to me with the point down. Still undecided about keeping it, because setting it will be the expensive part, and it's too nice to leave laying in a box. The stone is 10 x 6.5 x 5.2mm deep.

Tanzanite is not recommended as a ring stone unless you are prepared to baby it and only wear it for special occasions.

Very interesting looking green beryl although it might not fit the setting at 10 x 7 mm. Beryls are also not recommended for everyday wear, but as the occasional wear RHR. How often are you planning to wear this ring and how active will your hands be?

I don't think I'm rough on my jewelry but I have a 4 year old so I also don't want to worry about it. And I don't want to go through all this just to have to replace the stone again.
It looks like I may just have to use my "credit" with Lisa to purchase a different stone and start a different project. But first I'm going to finish my pear. I just have to keep looking for a stone <sigh> Its frustrating - but when I first saw this mounting I knew I loved it and that a CS would be awesome in it. So I'm hanging in there for now and continuing the search.

I just want to chime in that although this is far from ideal color for a sapphire, as a very dark almost black stone with a blue flame inside, it's pretty cool. I don't see it set in a traditional halo, but as an unusual statement piece, perhaps gothic in style, I do really like it especially if the price is right.

i agree with you, blue.

Contact Lisa [email protected] . She's been very great with me through this so I'd love it if someone else could use this stone! She did tell me that she'd probably recut this to something smaller to try and lighten it up. I'm disappointed that this didn't work out for my ring but I still can't recommend Lisa enough she really has been great!

wow, it is amazing on the picture.

Even if it didn't work out for you with this stone, that's a great endorsement! Nice of you to post that jbkhere!

I had dealings with Lisa once and she's just wonderful to work with. Although I ended up returning the stone, she was very understanding and I would work with her again if the opportunity arises.

Can I get expert opinions on this stone please? IT FITS!! At least to my eye it does - I have to take it to a jeweler to make sure. I bought it as a PORTUGUESE PEAR CUT BRAZILIAN AQUAMARINE. 11.05 x 6.7 x 4.57. I know - not what I was looking for and I haven't decided if I'll even use it but I wanted to get your input..... Thanks all!!
