Honey, will you marry... Oh. Never mind...

LONDON (Reuters) - It is the one moment every man wants to get right -- and which London floor-fitter Lefkos Hajji could hardly have got more wrong.

The luckless 28 year-old''s dreams of giving his sweetheart, Leanne, 26, the ultimate proposal have literally vanished into thin air.

Hajji, of Hackney, east London, had concealed a $12,000 engagement ring inside a helium balloon. The idea was that she would pop the balloon as he popped the question.

But as he left the shop, a gust of wind pulled the balloon from his hand and he watched the ring -- and quite possibly the affections of his girlfriend -- sailing away over the rooftops.

"I couldn''t believe it," he told The Sun newspaper.

"I just watched as it went further and further into the air.

"I felt like such a plonker. It cost a fortune and I knew my girlfriend would kill me."

Hajji spent two hours in his car trying to chase and find the balloon, without success.

"I thought I would give Leanne a pin so I could literally pop the question," he said.

"But I had to tell her the story -- she went absolutely mad. Now she is refusing to speak to me until I get her a new ring."

He is hoping the ring will still turn up.

"It would be amazing if someone found it," he added.

I feel bad, but seriously what a dumba**!!!

She won''t speak to him until he gets her a new ring?! The hell??

I get that it was a bad idea (coupled with bad luck), but you''d think she''d be helping him search high and low for it!

That poor guy. I feel so bad for him. I can understand his gf being disappointed, but if she truly loves him, she should realize that more than ever, he really needs her love and support right now. Losing a $12K diamond ring probably feels horrible. Add to that a pissed off girlfriend. Man. Poor guy. I really hope she come to her senses and gives the guy a hug and tells him its okay.

I just read this on Yahoo!! How terrible!!

I feel so bad for him, and her too. It actually could''ve been a cute idea..... but maybe he should''ve used a regular balloon?

Shucks...$12,000!!! He must feel so bad. And his girlfriend too...her hopes of proposal going up in smoke. Or in thin air?

I hope that means he doesn''t have to start saving all over again for a ring? What if he was saving for YEARS????

But seriously, she shouldn''t not talk to him though. I would be upset, but still....

Cute idea, but needed to be more thought out!

Sucks to be him right about now...

Good grief!!!
Talk about bad luck, poor guy

AWWWwww... poor guy! Yeah, it was a cute idea but poorly planned, but wow... he was going to ask her to be his wife... show the man you love some mercy, he just lost $12k in an attempt to make a special proposal. Hopefully an honest person will find it and return it.

I hope that he had insurance. I have a fear that my boyfriend will propose on the beach when we go on vacation at the beginning of next month and that I''ll be shaking so much that I will drop the ring in the sand and it will be lost forever!

What a horrible girlfriend. It was a really cute proposal idea. Maybe it''s worked out for the best, she sounds way too immature to get married. Sorry if that sounds harsh...

Dude, if it were me, I''d have that balloon wrapped around my wrist about 424112 times before taking outside! And then possibly stapled to my hand...poor guy.

Average wrist size is 7.5 inches...some math...

265,000 feet worth of string! That should hold the balloon down...

Do you think the finder would return it? I guess it depends on who finds it....it might be someone hard up for cash who sells it for money, or decides to give it to THEIR girlfriend? Hopefully, someone honest finds it. Then again, it might be lost in a ditch somewhere and never found. Sigh.... such a waste.

exactly how I felt...

Won''t speak to him?!?!?! WTF!!!

Sounds like the $12 grand lost on the ring just saved him $$$$$$$$ in divorce later! How could she be so mean. I would be thrilled if SO popped the question - it''s not about the ring!!!

Oh poor guy. I guess he thought the ring was heavy enough that it would prevent the ballon from flying away...of course that''s what I was thinking so I can''t say he''s a fool or anything.

I really don''t know why she wouldn''t talk to him though. It was an accident, this stuff happens, it''s not as if he did it on purpose.

so FI has a really evil mind

(which is what i like about him

) - when i told him about this guy and his proposal, he said "is he stupid OR A GENIUS??". i of course did not catch his meaning but our guy friend did. they were thinking, he's a genius if there wasn't any ring in the balloon at all!!
