How accurate are ring sizes?

My e-ring is supposedly a size 4.75. I took it to the jeweler to size it up to a 5. It measured a 4.5 on the metal sizing rod. Huh? I tried on a 5 on the sample metal rings and it slides way too easily over my knuckle. But, the size 5 plastic ring I have at home fits slightly loose, enough for good stacking but not loose enough to fall off my finger.

Would the bench worker size my ring to a "real" size 5? I will talk to him Tuesday.

Also, the plastic ring sizers estimate my fiancé to be a 10.5. I took his ring from his previous marriage in and the metal rod showed it to be a size 9. Again, huh? His old band fits too snuggly, but I don't think he would be able to cram a 10.5 finger into a size 9 ring.

What sizers are the most accurate?

I honestly can't answer your question. All I can say is that different rings even if they are the same size fit or feel different on your finger. My wife had her ring sized twice until they got it just perfect, I was told I was a size 10.5 ... until I tried it on and it stuck like hardened cement. Using cold water and some soap, they got it back off and stretched it on a machine twice until it fits perfectly. Of course if I work out lifting weights, my finger puffs up again and it can't be pulled off easily. In my case, the stock metal sizing ring is fairly thin, my wife picked out a nice fat band that has no "give"; so same size but just fit diferently. Also I have noticed that some women finger size change a little during the year, I guess heat and humidity can change your finger size. I would just keep trying until your jeweler gets it right, sometimes it just doesn't go as easy as you think it should.Good Luck!!!

Some sizers differ also thin bands fit different than thick. If you want to make sure you get things sized right by your own set (metal) and send them or give them to whoever it is that's doing you ring sizing. Or if you are in person, use the sizers they use, and make sure the sizer fits you the best you can. And tell them to use that... whatever size they call it.

I can wear anything from a 6.25 to a 7. Depends on the style of the ring and thickness. I've worn sevens that have fit perfectly and others that have been loose.

I have a mandrel and sizing rings (metal) at home. Cost me 13 bucks. Worth it. Mine are 'middle' thickness. Not super thin not super thick.

I found that my thick bands need To be bigger than my thin 2mm ERing to fit properly

I was told that there's a big difference between metal and plastic rings. I'd stick with whatever the metal sizers say for ordering rings. It will be more accurate...
