Hello, all micropave/pave owners. :wavey: I have a question for you. How badly will a paved donut on an E-ring scratch a pave wedding band that's worn next to it without a spacer?

 Looking at Frankie's, Syd's, and other's beautiful paved sets had inspired me to purchased one as well. I want to wear my set together without a spacer. I realized that the diamond melees on the donut will scratch the platinum on the side of the wedding band, but to what extent? I've worn my 5 stone diamond ring on my necklace next to a gold pendent and seen the highly polish gold finish on the pendant turned into a satin dull scratched area. This I don't mind. However, I do mind the melees on the donut popping out from the friction. :?

Those of you who've had experiences or heard of this issue, how bad does it get? Would you advise me to get a plain donut without diamonds like Syd's E-ring? :?:

Oh man... please do tell. My fiance and I have yet to find out. Her e-ring's donut is paved, and we're scared of it scratching the w-band too.

I noticed that your fiance had her gorgeous set for about a year now. How has it been wearing? My diamond ring scratched the gold right off my pendant with under a weekend's wear, but the scratches were shallow. It made it look like a brushed satin finish so I didn't mind. Hopefully the scratches will be minor so I won't have to ask for a plain donut. ::)

TitanCi's beautiful set!

^TracyBear - you remembered?! She wears it seldomly believe it or not... for fear of scratching it! And some of the times that she HAS worn it.. it's been dinged a few times, so she gets upset and wants to wear it less and less! LOL!!!

There is a noticeable hairline scratch towards 5-6 o'clock, but it's inevitable. I was SO worried about the donut really messing up or even marring the metal of the WB. We have YET to find out! Funny thing is.. I just Sonicare'd her ring to clean it!

Oh no! It's terrible that she has that lovely set and not wear it. I wonder if it's like getting a new car. At first you're afraid to scratch it, but after getting a few dents, you start to care less and just enjoy the experience. :))

This might sound ridiculous, but at one point, I thought of paving only one side of the donut so I can wear my wedding band on the unpaved side. My fiance said, "Let it scratch away. Nothing last forever so quit worrying about it lasting for a lifetime. It won't." I'm hoping that since the rings are platinum, I can buff the scratches and not lose much metal. :?

I think over time you will have issues. The diamonds are going to rub against your band causing scratches, but the band is also going to be constantly rubbing and bumping against the delicate pave and prongs on the donut causing damage as well, possibly chipping the tiny melee or causing the prongs to bend and the stone to fall out. You may be more protected because it plat (?) than if it were white gold, but I would want to wear a spacer to help protect both rings.

I only wore my set for about 2 weeks without the spacer. My bands were a little tight so that did help them from rubbing up against each other. However I got paranoid and did end up getting the spacer. I'm actually surprized but really after a few days you don't even notice the spacer.

However if you really don't want a spacer I would sauter them together. When I spoke to VC about this he thought you would see damage within 1-2 years if not sooner pending how hard you are on your hands/ ring set.

You are going to damage both rings, and soon. Don't do this. 'Scratching' is the least of your problems. You're going to wear out the prongs and the stones will fall out, you're going to damage the seats underneith so that they'll be hard to reset, and you're going to gouge the side of the other ring in the process. You might even damage the diamonds on the wedding band if the configuration is such that the girdles of the stones come in contact with the diamonds in the other ring.

I think I'll be paranoid like you so I just emailed Mark and ask him to NOT pave the center part of the donut on one side. It's a small donut, so I don't think I'll see much of a visual difference. I want to actually wear my rings so practically I think that's the way to go if I wanted to keep my pretty paved donut. ::)

:errrr: HOLY MOLY, your post was the one that prompt me to remove the melees on my donut, but only in the center part of one side of my donut. I can't entirely give up the bling! :(sad

I swear, no one will want to to buy my custom ring if I ever decided to upgrade because I've changed the shank and now the paving. But it works for me so oh well. :rodent:

I have huge knuckle resulting in giant gaps in between my fingers so the euro shank doesn't prevent my ring from spinning because there's no flesh on the bottom to catch the corners of the euro shank. Instead, I draw up this "V' shank idea and had Mark made it. It works for me because it stops the spin and the ring looks circular from the outside so I can keep my 7->5o'clock paving on the band. BLING! :sun:

Now for the donut. I'm having Mark pave one side and on the other side, just don't pave the center part that'll be touching my wedding band. We'll see how it goes, I'm excited!!

It has been brought up many times to pave one side and not the other- it seems the overall attitude towards that idea is to not do it. I think your ring will look really off with only one side pave-ed. That would irritate me to no end. I absolutely could not do it. I'm practically, but love the look of pave on the donut so to me the spacer solved the problem. I guess to each their own but I would think more about a spacer or sautering them together.

I agree, having one side was completely bare would bother me. But one melee missing from the center part one one side of the donut might not be noticeable to me at all, especially if the band is laying right up next to it. I wouldn't mind the spacer at all if it's a flush setting because it camouflages so well. Since my setting has a gap, I don't want the appearance of TWO gaps when the spacer won't stay put next to the wedding band.

I kept thinking that people won't buy my ring if I ever need to sale it, but who cares about other people loving this ring down the line. I think it's more important that I love the ring now and that it's functional to my lifestyle so I could enjoy it everyday. When I drew the design for my shank, I thought, "Man, this is not going to fit anyone's else finger, it'll be really hard to resale." But it fits my finger and it worked for me so I'm braver about making odd design choices now. ::)
