hey gang,

i''ve been following these posts for a while and i think you''re all really knowledgable (and nice!!!)!

i''m looking at a few cushion cuts for an ER and i''m confused as to why some stones have a higher carat weight but smaller length, width and depth dimensions. for example:

Stone 1: 1.5 carat measures 7.46x6.53x4.43 (appears larger)
Stone 2. 1.61 carat measures 7.23x6.48x4.42 (appears smaller)

can a heavier stone appear smaller than a lighter stone?

what gives???

definitely possible! There are other factors that affect how large a stone "faces up." Namely, depth and the thickness of the girdle.

it has to do with how the stone was cut. yes, a heavier stone can face up or appear smaller. this is why cut is so important. extra weight can been hidden in stones that are cut too deep, have med-thick girdles etc..

This happened to me recently. I was looking at 1.5 carat stones which measured 7.2 mm in diameter. However, when I looked online,~ 1.35 carat stones were measuring the same diameter. The difference: I had specified no greater than 61.5% depth on the online stones, and the jeweler was showing me 63% depth, 62% table diamonds. That''s alot of lost real estate that doesn''t help your diamond look bigger. Make sure you''re looking at ideal cut stones.
