How big is too big for a cushion cut set in a halo?

My girlfriend has a ring size somewhere b/w a 5 & 6 and I am currently trying to decide what size stone to purchase for her (among other things). I think I'd like to get somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5ct, but given I'll be putting it in a halo, I am cognizant of it not being "too big" (if there is such a thing). Does anyone have recommendations and/or pictures of stones b/w 1.5 & 2.5 in a halo that you'd be willing to share? From my g/f's perspective, she tends to like bigger rings w/ fancy stones, but she's also pretty modest and I think a stone that's too large might make her feel a bit self-conscious.

I'm thinking about putting it in any of the following settings w/ a rose gold halo & platinum band:

Also open to any other suggestions you have for beautiful split-shank settings.

Really appreciate your thoughts!

Hi and welcome! That's a really hard question for us to answer, as each one of us may have different opinions. I think a lot of it depends on your social circle. What size stone do most of the ladies have? If they have a 1/2 ct. and she's rocking a halo'ed 2.5 ct, she might be self conscious. There's no way we can answer that for you.

Look through this thread to see all sorts of halo's with different size stones:

Look through this thread for stones btw 1-2 cts

1.5-2 cts.

Good luck!

I was just helping someone with a halo for a 9.6 mm stone (4 carats plus).

There really is no 'too big' if your lady likes the look, that's all that matters.

And cushions face up small for their carat weight. So a 2 carat cushion is considerably smaller (in face up) than a 2 carat round. So really I think you will be fine in the 2 carat range.

Here is a four carat cushion in a halo. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/4ct-cushion-in-steven-kirsch-halo-setting.165905/

Also please keep in mind that you want the HIGHEST quality pave for that ring. So reserve 5.5k of your budget for the halo. And go with either Steven Kirsch or Victor Canera for that. Alternately, Engagement Rings Direct also has a hand forged bench and they do great work as well.

Additionally both Victor and ERD can source very nice cushions for you, so if one stop shopping is important I would consider working with one of them. If Steven is your vendor you can work with GOG for the stone (Victor and GOG don't work together though, just as an FYI).

Too big is whatever makes her uncomfortable! I could easily rock a 2.5 halo but I'm older and live in a really nice area. A 1.5 could always be upgraded some day?
