How do I get an Antique stone education in London

I’m about two years in to my almost entirely online exposure to antique cut diamonds. Like most of you I have fallen for their charm, history and personality. I hope to some day buy an antique stone (Ring) but I have almost no real life experience looking at them. I will have a chance to visit some shops in London soon (And elsewhere in the U.K.) and I don’t expect to buy anything but I really want to get an idea of how these stone look in real life. How exactly do I do this ? Can I just be upfront with the shops and explain that I’m still in the research phase of shopping ? It seems a bit awkward to just ask to see things without a plan to buy them. Although a purchase is surely in the future. I just don’t feel confident enough yet to make that kind of financial decision. Plus there are so many good deals online ! How does one get their hands on some of these stones anyway! Is there a museum for me somewhere ? A hands on Antique jewelry museum would be really nice (obviously not an option but wouldn’t it be cool!)

Oh what a dilemma! To me the research is sometimes more than half the fun!:)

I am also newish to the realm of antique/ old cuts myself so I went to a few shops in my city. I was very open with the fact that I was just starting my search. Unfortunately, there are very few antique cut specialists in Boston.

You are lucky to be going to a city with a lot of opportunities to see old cuts! Seems like the London antique stores like Katherine James etc have a great selection.

Hi, if you are going to be in London, I would think that this vendor would be a good stop. They have a lot of old cuts available. Whether you find their prices palatable, may be another question, but they have a lot of options.

Try Gray’s Antique market too - lots of vendors so you can browse to get a feel first if that makes you more comfortable.

In your situation, I’d probably say I was doing research for a purchase in the near future but wouldn’t be buying immediately. That way you’re open and honest and can get a feel for how helpful particular vendors are as well as getting a feel for the antique stones.

Ishy Antiques on IG is a good U.K. follow

I’d second grays antique market. The vendors are pretty relaxed and happy to answer questions, let you try on jewels whilst taking photos and videos of the items. Enjoy and come back with pictures!

Guy from Hancocks in London is great at educating you while you peruse their jewels- they have a large selection !

When you visit Hancocks in the Burlington Arcade, you can also stop in at Michael Rose and at Susannah Lovis. I’d also go to nearby Bentley & Skinner.

I agree with @lissyflo - if you explain upfront that you’re doing research for a future purchase, I’m sure the merchants will be appreciative and more than happy to show you their wares.
