How do you pronounce "scallop"?

It was cal where I was raised. It is call where I live in Aus now. I very strongly suspect it is a British influence, the "call" pronunciation. English-based pronunciation has 'a' sounds coming from a lower area, so it sounds more like 'ahhh.' North American accents have the 'a' from a higher nasal origin, sounds like the 'a' in 'cat.'

Neither (nIther/nEther) way is wrong.

That pronunciation actually sounds more like mine and less like my husband's. His is really more like "scollllllllup"

So weird- I never heard it pronounced the first way before and then this thread and then right after we were watching something on tv and the couple pronounced it the first way! LOL. Very timely. They were from Maine btw. So definitely regional.

Now that you mention it he does say S-coll-ups. Hmmm....he's British.

On the other hand, Paula Dean only complains about a few things, burnt/overcooked/rubbery S-caaaaaal-ups being one of them....

I think we need two more choices in the "S-cal-op poll.

Lol I can honestly say that in our 7 or so years together I don't think he's ever used the word "gallup" haha, but I'd imagine he'd say it like "gal-up". He's out of town right now so I can't ask

I'm from Rhode Island and I pronounce it s-cal-up (like calorie). Perhaps I missed the regional memo?

I say it with the cal as in "California," not as in "call." In other words, what Madelise said.

HA, yep, I say it this way too. My mom is from Boston and this is how she pronounces it, so I think it may be a regional thing.
