how fluorescence affects transparency in different lightings

Hello!

I’m thinking about buying a diamond with medium blue fluorescence, and I would like to understand how fluorescence affects transparency in different lightings.

The good people at James Allen already told me that this diamond will show slight haziness in sunlight and in blacklight. They told me that the diamond looks clear indoors.

Will the diamond lose its sparkle and brilliance indoors under normal lighting? So basically I want the diamond to be as sparkly as any other ideal cut diamond without fluorescence when viewed indoors.

Or will the haziness only occur in sunlight and blacklight?

Thanks!

No worries with med fluor.

Re: how fluorescence affects transparency in different light

I can't speak abut a given vendor's diamond due to PS policy- but more prescient is that any assessment of a diamond's fluorescence must be done first hand.
While I agree with John that, in general, Medium Blue is not likely to present any problem- it's also important to point out that Fluorescence grading is somewhat more inconsistent as compare to grading of body color, for example.
SO, there are times a Medium Blue Diamond can behave pretty much like another that GIA graded Strong.

For me- the bottom line is that Fl in general is not a problem- but for buyers concerned abut FL, I'd limit it to "faint"

Re: how fluorescence affects transparency in different light

So these are my questions -

* Given that a diamond exhibits slight haziness in sunshine, will the diamond lose its sparkle and brilliance indoors under normal lighting?

* Given that a diamond exhibits slight haziness in sunshine, will that diamond sparkle the same as any other ideal cut diamond without fluorescence when viewed indoors.

Thank you!

JA already said it is clear indoors. Fluorescence is only visible in sufficiently UV-rich lighting.

Hi 880,
Just so that my prior answer was not misinterpreted-
Most Medium and Strong Blue stones don't exhibit any lack of sparkle in my experience due to the fluorescence- and the effect of how they look blue is really cool- even that, to me does not seem less "sparkly" than an inert stone- no matter the lighting
again my general experience..and it's important to remember that words are insufficient to describe certain aspects.

Great! This is what I'm looking for.

I'll buy it and ask David Atlas to inspect and appraise it.

Thank you!
