How inaccurate could this appraisal be?

I recently purchased a used ring for cheap - about .5 carat for $300, but after taking it home and really pondering the appraisal that came with it, I realized that something was wrong about this. The appraisal consists solely of this information:

Appraised value (2,200)
Measurement 4.90-4.91 x 3.5mm
Weignt 0.50ct
Clarity SI2
Color G

This is set in an old six prong setting, so I think that it would be hard to very accurately grade this, and the reason I ask is that if you run the numbers on it the depth is over 70%. Not that I have any good tools at my disposal, but it looks to me like they might have gotten that wrong. I know that set appraisals are for value only, but just how easy is it to mess up? Even a few tenths of a mm make a big difference.

I have looked at a few diamonds in a store, and I will say that so far it doesn''t look quite as sparkly as those, but I also recognize that those diamonds were under some very nice lights and on a very nice background.

Do you think it''s worth a second appraisal? If the cut really is that bad then I''d much rather save my money and spend it on something decent, but I''m just not sure.

Is it a round diamond? It isn't unusual for Princess cuts etc to have a greater depth, just wondering. My post should bump this so the experts can see it and advise you further, but if you only paid $300 for it and it must have spoken to you, you could have got a good deal. Hopefully one of the pros will see this and advise you further regarding the second appraisal. Do you have the actual depth, and table measurements available? Even better the crown and pavillion angles would be very helpful also, and the girdle thickness.

An appraisal is only as good as the appraiser. The line to read first is the signature, not the price. If there isn't one, or if you can't figure out who it is and why you should be interested in their opinions, you should ignore the document in it's entirety.

Ah yes, round cut. Worst case says that I''m out $300 which is a chunk, but not terrrrible. I might be able to turn it around somewhere else, or just use it in something different.

The info above is all that I have on it, I wish I had more measurements. Would it be worth having it un-set and appraised perhaps?

Hi Jam,

It must have spoke to you, for you to buy it.....So for $300 i don''t think i would bother with an apprasial.

Would you like it anytheless if the apprasial down grades it?
