I recently purchased a used ring for cheap - about .5 carat for $300, but after taking it home and really pondering the appraisal that came with it, I realized that something was wrong about this. The appraisal consists solely of this information:
Appraised value (2,200)
Measurement 4.90-4.91 x 3.5mm
Weignt 0.50ct
Clarity SI2
Color G
This is set in an old six prong setting, so I think that it would be hard to very accurately grade this, and the reason I ask is that if you run the numbers on it the depth is over 70%. Not that I have any good tools at my disposal, but it looks to me like they might have gotten that wrong. I know that set appraisals are for value only, but just how easy is it to mess up? Even a few tenths of a mm make a big difference.
I have looked at a few diamonds in a store, and I will say that so far it doesn''t look quite as sparkly as those, but I also recognize that those diamonds were under some very nice lights and on a very nice background.
Do you think it''s worth a second appraisal? If the cut really is that bad then I''d much rather save my money and spend it on something decent, but I''m just not sure.
