5 Minutes.

I am so evil.... I am already thinking about the leap to 2+ cts (from 1.52) on a ring that's 2 weeks old. In my defense, I think that wil be my "perfect" size, or the "final resting place" of my personal ering mania.

When you feel it shrinking, take it off for a day (or longer, depending upon the shrinkage syndrome severity), revert to a smaller size stone, and then wait for the remorse to set in.

Only then are you allowed to wear the now strangly HUGE stone that you put away!

Not a bad idea. Does this mean I need to go out and get a .75 Ideal stone?

Just kidding--I am pooped out! This diamond business is exhausting. I need a break. Upgrade is 2005 project.

Does it count thinking about how much bigger of a ruby or sapphire or spinel you could have got for the same money as soon as you sent the payment off?

Let me see,

1.47 F-VS1 MQ in 1985

2.05 D-VS2 OV in 1988, so I'd say it took me 3 years to be bitten by the syndrome, but at a cost of 3 times what I paid for the MQ in 1985. Maybe that was not such a wise financial decision.

3.01 F-SI1 Pear in 1996 but that doesn't count because I got dumped by ex husband in 1993, and then met new husband websailor in 1995. Websailor is lucky that this is it for me ... a 4 ct diamond would look out of place on my size 3.75 finger.

p.s. and in the case of what Wink is currently making for me, it was 15 years ago that I bought something similar. I think its time for an upgrade don't you think?

Good point, storm, but isn't that why we are all here...? For the diamonds?
2.gif

Actually, when I think of how much more I might have in my retirement account if I didn't have the hots for the rocks, THAT'S when I get a bit dizzy.

Jennifer5973,

Did we forget to mention the MRF (multiple ring factor)? For those lucky folks with more than one significant peice of bling-bling, we multiple the number of days you are not allowed to wear any major bling-bling by the number of rings you have...

In your case, I count 5 on one finger, so you have to go without your diamonds for one work week....

I forsee a SERIOUS case of withdrawal!

I've had my ring for two years now and I haven't caught it yet! I'm still as happy with my ring as the first day I got it. Actually, I think I'm even happier with my ring now than when I first got it because as I learned more about diamonds I began to appreciate how amazing my stone is.

Sumi, your husband is one lucky guy.

I am an evil person and should be ashamed. But I'm not.

But since I am shameless, the topic of the upgrade to 2+cts has already come up--I am concerned about prices increasing even more by December/early 2005, which is whent this upgrade was tentatively scheduled.

In my defense, I am so happy with my new ering, that the "10 yr monster princess" is but a distant memory. This is my ring, period. I have the bands and now my ering. I think I'd rather have other diamond items--like killer studs or a bigger bracelet down the line. How many erings can you have?
2.gif
I guess you could say the same thing about wedding bands (are you reading this, websailor?
2.gif
) and to each, her own, but I have come around at least to the point that I think one major ering is going to do the trick for me.

So a little of sumi and some other sage Pscope members has rubbed off on me!

Not necessarily. Tried on a killer Ceylon Sapphire cushion cut stone. Even on the secondary market that ring cost more than mine. I don't know the carat weight; but man that thing had everything going for it. Size, color, cut, clarity. Ahhh...still dreaming....and I am bad....I did put the bee in hubby's bonnet.

After all, Sapphires are my birthstone.

No shrinkage here......just needing a gem fix.

I hear ya F&I

i saw THIS beauty while surfin last wk - i luv padparadscahs

But my birthstone is a diamond... so i'm gettin another diamond instead (unfortunately, this sapphire's outta my price range)..

"3.26 Natural Untreated Padparadscah Sapphire is $3,500.00 USD per carat, total is $11,410.00 USD."

Wow, that one is a beauty. They have some amazing saphires on that site.

Agreed. We bought the stone I intend to stay with....the 1.24, H, SI2. I've had it nearly a year now, and it still looks HUGE to me. There will be no upgrade for me...this is the diamond Rich proposed with, and this is the one I'll stay with.

sumi and aljdewey,

I actually admire people like you. I also have a girlfriend who lives in a $2 million house, retired early, could well afford to buy any diamond she well chooses, but still wears the .25ct diamond her husband gave her 30 years ago.

Am I allowed to vote on that?

I had my 1.25ct e-ring stone for a good 15 years before I ever thought of wanting bigger. (I did change the setting a couple of times.....) I still have it, and always will. It hangs around my neck for now, but may migrate into someting else down the road.

This e-ring stone is "the last". (I was given those instructions when we started looking.

.) Thus I probably got slightly bigger and better than I would have gone for otherwise, but that's not all bad.

Well, One part of me is cheering for you and your husband. The other part is kicking his heels and going "DANG! I HATE it when THAT happens...

Wink

P.S. Really I am always stressing to the guys that this is an emotional purchase and to make it special. Sounds like your guy did it right!

Hmm NEGATIVE 5 minutes?

This is an interesting board. Lot's of fun kidding each other which is neat (to me) to see.

In the end, I say it all comes down to your own personal choice. I honor those who choose to wear their original e-ring for the rest of their life. I also honor those who choose (hopefully with their mate's agreement) to upgrade/change. The latter is regardless of whether that is 1 hour after they got the e-ring, on their anniverary, or because on that day they felt like it.

Life is too short to worry about some things. I'm sure we've all been exposed to tragic things where people's lives have ended sooner than expected.

Talk with your partners (or yourself, if you are single), decide how to use your household resources, and then go for it! Don't look back, and don't regret the choice you made. Make the best decision you can with the information you have, and go ahead in life being happy. From what I've seen, for most folks on this board, buying a nice new diamond will give them a thrill that will last as long as they have it.

Whew, I like to make joking, fun posts

Diamond Shrinkage in pictures....

small_diamond_shrinkage.jpg

For me, I don't really care too much about the size of my stone. My stone is .75 carats, that's on the small side in Los Angeles. Granted, since it's cut so well it might appear a little bigger, but it's still on the small side. But, I absolutely love my stone. You can't get any better cut and it's G/vvs2. I don't know, I'm just 100% happy with my e-ring and I don't see myself ever wanting to part with it. In my circle of friends, I have by far the smallest stone, but I totally wear my ring with pride. Since my stone is so beautiful, I just couldn't care less about increasing the size. I think the .75 range is perfect for my hands.

I don't think it's wrong for other people to get upgrades, it's just not something that I'm interested in.

I think I'd rather have other diamond jewelery pieces than to replace my e-ring.
1.gif

I had it bad for awhile. Mostly after I joined these diamond forums. I went from a 0.55 to a 0.70 to a 1.04 and finally to a 1.34 in less than 2 years. Since I got my 1.34 about a year ago, I haven't had any urge for a bigger stone. It still looks really big to me at times.
1.gif
I wear a size 3.75 ring size and I'm pretty small, so maybe that is why?

I'd say we did a lot of upgrading in a short amount of time. But, we always had the money for these upgrades and nothing was ever a debt to us. Also, we had money for our down payment on our house as well. If we hadn't had the money or were sacrificing a house, I wouldn't have succumbed to the diamond shrinkage illness as much as I did.

I had definitely been suffering from diamond shrinkage! My stone is just under 1.1 carat.

I just got back from a 1 week vacation. I didn't wear my ring for fear of losing it or being stolen. When I got back yesterday & put it on, it seemed absolutely huge! My husband has decided that every time I mention another upgrade, he's going to take me on a short vacation!

When did I first experience diamond shrinkage? When I found this site about one week ago!

Darn It!!

I have been married 20 years and had just lately begun to notice platinum is the popular metal now. My ring is gold and it was so different than my mom's white silver! (Of course we all wanted gold 20 years ago because we wanted to be different than our moms of the 1950's who had white gold!) Oh how things change!!

It seems as though diamond engagement rings have gotten bigger in the 20 years since I first got mine. Believe it or not, but mine at .33 was a bit above average (where we live) way back then...

So what I'm trying to say is that I'm very proud of being married for 20 years and I feel my diamond reflects the moment in time in which I was engaged. Sure I would really like to get a bigger one and it seems like brides-to-be today do get bigger ones, but if I do get a bigger diaomnd, it will be for an anniversary. My original diamond e-ring is not going anywhere!!

Ann

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Blah blah blah.

You found PS for a reason-now go get yourself that big rock you deserve!
You know you want it. So do it.
