I just got my left ear pierced yesterday. Now I am thinking, how many men wear a single diamond stud to work? i work in an office. i think its just along the lines of a nice watch or necklace, right? I dont want to look too "street" if you know what i mean.

FWIW, I wear a diamond ring but don''t wear an earring.

I think this will depend on they type of industry you work in and location.

computer programmer at a retailer''s headquarters.

I think it depends on the man. I like a stud on a lot of men, but if you don''t have the look, you look silly.
David Beckham, yes, Mr Rodgers, no. Also depends on how big your diamond is; .25, elegant; 2 ct, "street".

I''d check out the jewelry of the other men in your office? Do any of them wear earrings? Try to get a feel for how conservative your office culture is.

LOL! Nice comparison!

So Ziggy, are you more the Beckham or Mr. Rogers type?

And if the former please include photos.

I think since you don''t see customers directly (do you?) then you should feel free to wear what you like in terms of personal adornment.

Some people wear diamonds for others.
It is part of their style or a fashion accessory.

Some wear a diamond for themselves.
I do.

Whether I am more of a Mr. Rodgers or a David Beckham never enters my mind.
I just do what I want.

I'd imagine if you interviewed everyone who sees me they may place me in Rodgers' or Beckham's camp or somewhere in between.
That's fine, but it does not concern me.

If you want to wear a diamond, wear a diamond.
If you want to fit in, do what your peers do.
There is no wrong choice.

i dont see myself as beckam but i definitely do not run with the mr rogers crew. i work in a typical office environment. i like a little jewelry on my ear but do not know if its accepted in the office and do not want it to hinder my career if most people view it negatively.

If in doubt I would leave the stud out Ziggy and just wear it off duty.

i am not in doubt. i just never thought much about it nor have i observed other men enough to know how many men actually wear them.

I'm not disagreeing, only adding another thought.
If you pierce an ear but work without an earring everyone will see the hole.
In a very conservative and intolerant workplace some could wonder about who you are outside the office. (Absurd, but lots of people ARE absurd)
A hole with no earring can seem to them as though you have two lives.

If there were an earring there at least you are holding your head up high and being your confident self.
This might be good for a career, depending on your boss.

I have one ear pierced- and have worn a single earring at some more conservative workplaces in the diamond industry.
Without question you''ll get some flack. I did.....and possibly, it even affected my working conditions before I had achieved status.
If you sell a lot in my business no one gives a hoot if you''re wearing ladies undies, much less an earring.

I''d say if you don''t want to make any waves, don''t experiment.
if you''re the boss, go for it!!!

Agreed. Unless you''re in a high-up position, it wouldn''t look appropriate wearing an earring. I don''t think it looks right in the majority of office settings and the earring, for all you know, may entirely change other''s perception of you.

You have a point Ken.

i cant believe a pierced ear brings so much emotions. to me its just a hole. i dont judge people and wonder if they live double lives or not because to some extent, everybody lives two lives, a personal one and a professional one. even coming into work in a suit and tie is already living a lie because most of us dont dress like that outside the the office so how can wearing an earring outside the office but not in the office and leaving a hole there or vice versa be any different? its just like girls wearing low cut shirts, they all do it, just not in the office. anyways, i thought about piercing my ear as a fashion statement for myself. i am not doing this to please anyone. i dont come to work in rags but i dont wear a suit either. i try to look nice for myself and others. i only thought of wearing an earring just like wearing a nice watch. yikes!

I think much of the fear and anxiety over men wearing an earring is the belief by some that it may mean a man is gay.

When gays are no longer thought of as inferior this will cease to be an issue.

My husband wears a stud in one ear. It''s usually a small titanium ball, or a small (.10) diamond stud. He takes it out if he''s going to meet with clients, but leaves it on in the office.

thats exactly my point, i will wear it normally to the office but if i have to meet with people or go on interviews i will not wear it. would wearing a 0.5ct single stud be too large for the office?

My husband has his ears pierced on both ears, and used to wear princess studs. He used to wear them into the office when he was self-employed and they didn''t look "street" at all. Now that he works for another company and is in a different line of work, he hasn''t put them on in years, because he doesn''t want anyone to get the wrong idea. He talks to students every day and he wants to maintain the level of respect from them. The piercing holes are still there, but they''re not noticeable unless someone is checking him out, and if that happens, well, there would be other issues. hehe. Also, he said he grew out of them, whatever that means, because I would never outgrow diamonds.

I have to say that I don''t agree that a hole with no earring can seem like you have two lives, because it''s obvious everyone has 2 lives. At work, you''re expected to be professional, whether you are a high level executive or the guy in the mail room, and at home, well you are relaxed with family, kids, friends, etc. So I say unless you work in a very relaxed office environment where people wear shorts and flip flops, you should enjoy your sparklies on your time off.

Also, I think it''s very sexist that women can wear studs to the office and no one would look at them strange, but if a man does, it might turn heads. But that''s the reality of the world we live in.

For my office? Yes. For yours? I dunno. Totally personal preference.

IMO, yeah. When you said "stud" I was picturing something as clean as a metal ball. A .5 ideal cut diamond in one ear is serious bling. Personally, if I were a guy in IT wearing a single stud I''d aim for something closer to .25-.30.

.5oct is a large stud. I think it would be cool and I would wear it in my workplace if I was a man... but I am in academia and really, anything goes.

FWIW, I actually prefer the look of 2 earings on men.

wow .50 is too large? i was seriously going for .70 LOL. i dont need to look like a celeb but i do have big ears, hehe.

If you''re even asking the question, then .5 is possibly too large. At least, it will certainly stand out.

If you were in an artistic field, or upper mgmt enough so no one would question anything you wore, or if you''re deeply in IT or facillities where the dress code is nearly non-existent you can probably get it away with it without comment.

As it is, only you know if .5 is too eye-catching or not in your workplace, but if you''re in an office where there *is* some sort of dress code and people aren''t sporting major facial hair or other physical "statements" then just know that your stud will be outside of the norm. If you''re comfortable with it, go for it.

I''m pretty conservative and I don''t see any problems with a diamond ear ring in the work place. .5 might be a bit big. Why not start with a smaller one. If there''s no reaction, upgrade in a few months.

I feel that management would be frowned upon more for wearing an ear ring. They''re supposed to set a good example, whatever the definition of that is.

Do what makes you happy. In computer programming, there''s no logic for not wearing one.

.5 is quite large in a stud. I would suggest getting a cz stud to try out the size for a while and decide whether to go bigger or smaller.
