How many of you have a MUCH cheaper Ering backup?

Hi all,

So I have purchased my ering band and diamond and I'm waiting for Ritani to get it made and get it sent back to me. I was wondering how many of you out there actually have a backup ring to your engagement ring. In September we are going to Nicaragua on vacation and we have pretty much decided that since we paid many times more than what the average Nicaraguan makes in a year that we should leave it home in our safe.

I have a coworker who's mom always wore a fake backup of her 3ct engagement ring because she felt it was just too valuable to wear everyday. I also have another coworker whose wife gained some weight during pregnancy so they just went out and got her a cheapo ring for her to wear until she loses the weight.

How many of you have your ering insured but still have a much, much cheaper backup ring that you or your girl would wear short-term during pregnancy or if you were on vacation and felt it would be a liability to being lost or stolen?

What are your stories? Thanks!

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

My ring is insured and I do not have a back up. If I am in an area/place where I am concerned about my safetly, I would leave my ring at home -- being mugged for a fake would not be any better than being mugged for the original in my opinion!

When I was pregnant I wore a larger diamond band when I could not wear my e-ring anymore.

But when funds allow :Up_to_something: I would like to get a "casual" ring a la the Tiffany etoile with a .50ct diamond. Just for comfort and still having a little bling on those days I don't want to wear a 1.7ct diamond.

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

I have several e rings. I wear them depending on the situation.

Around the house and area, I wear my newest ering (9.44 ctw) but I also have several smaller rings that I wear when I dont want to wear it. I have a 2.10 Ct, and a 3/4 and a .44 carat ring plus 3, 1 carat anniversary bands and a .66 ct anniversary band that I can switch around as needed.
When traveling out of the country, I always wear a plain 14kt YG band. No diamonds or engravings ect. When traveling internationally , I feel more comfortable wearing a ring that will attract little to no attention. I have never had a problem, but I see that there is no need to invite trouble. A plain gold band shows I am married and that is beautiful too!

Around town though, I have no problems wearing my regular rings, but yes it just depends on the situation. Good Luck on your trip!

The only place I usually won't wear my wedding set is to the beach. I have a few bands that I will wear when my set is not appropriate.

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

I don't have any fakey-mcfakerton rings - and besides, like someone said above, if your fear is safety, the average mugger probably doesn't know a real diamond from a fake one so that's not much "protection".

So in that instance (or in the event of traveling to a very poor area) I just leave the bling at home and wear my plain plat wedding band.

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

By PS standards my wrings are small - a total off 1.27 carats so I don't feel uncomfortable wearing it out. I do have several RHR that works as an ering since they are semi mounts with either diamonds or colored stones. I wear them sometimes to change things out.

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

I have a fakey I used to wear on vacation before I insured my current ring. I wore it while I was pregnant and gained weight. Resizing rings is costly and I just didn't want to do it, but felt naked without a ring.

Now I have a vintage ring I got at Christmas I can wear as well, but I may remove a stone and have it set as a pendant. Not quite sure yet though.

Both my e-rings are insured but since they are both getting remade or made .. I have been wearing my colored stone rings. I plan to continue with this practice as a diamond can get boring :P

charmypoo when are you getting your erings? should be soon, right???

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

I do!

It's a 3mm plain sterling band that cost me $12.

Fulfulls all the requirements of a good fake:
-Not flashy (what's the point of wearing a flashy fake in an unsafe neighbourhood  )
-Incredibly inexpensive (if I lose it on vacation I don't care one bit)
-No sentimental value (if I lose it on vacation I don't care one bit)
-Indestructible (for all those times I just don't want to be babying a ring)

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

I have a few different rings that I wear if I don't want to wear my regular wedding set for whatever reason. I have a plain gold band for travelling. I have a .50ct solitaire for times when I want a bit of sparkle but not so much that I would draw attention to myself.

I figure if I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing my regular wedding set then I'm not going to be comfortable wearing a fake one with the same carat weight. I also have my wedding set insured against loss and theft, but I still take precautions because it was hard to find an oval I really liked.

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

Wolfelot, If I were going to Nicaragua I would not wear anything but a plain silver band, as stated in another post you do not want to get mugged for a real or a fake ring. Or better yet, look for local craftsmen on your trip and get a nice memento of your trip and something to have for your less blingy days. Have a great trip!

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

I don't have one, don't see the point. Even though my ring is insured, I don't wear it when traveling abroad unless I know the place well.
As a tourist, I like to draw as little attention as possible, so wearing a fake is pointless as it defeats my purpose.
I just wear a plain gold band to show I'm married.

For Nicaragua, I'd definitely leave the bling at home.

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

Thanks everyone. The ring is staying put and definitly not going on the trip. Wearing just the wedding band when she gets it will solve the problem. Thanks everyone!

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

I have several rings I could use, but since we have not travelled much, it is not really for that reason. I do like to switch around
quite a bit though just for fun. Usually, when we travel, which mostly is within our state, I usually bring a few rings, and necklaces
and such. I just think it is fun to wear different looks.

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

I don't have an "engagement ring", but I do have several bands, diamond and plain. While I don't really travel out of the country, I do take into consideration activities and location. Most of the time it is diamonds on the finger. Out of country, I would only wear a plain band. But I'm sure all I would think about is how much I missed my diamonds and of course I'd be checking every ladies fingers.

Re: How many of you have a MUCH cheaper engagement ring back

this is a topic close to my heart - I couldn't insure my ring in the country I live in so I had to leave it back in the usa for a couple years and boy do I want something smaller that I could "afford" to lose. I'm trying to figure out how I want to handle this... but I am super bling deprived and feeling very very jealous of everyone when I see their diamonds lol
