How much can one expect to get for a used setting?

Hi all,

Am wondering where is the best place to try to sell a used engagement ring setting. Where have you all had success? And in general, how much did you get? Do jewelry stores or pawn shops buy just settings? It's a gold setting; have you ever had any luck with those cash for gold places? Thanks for any tips or insight! I know I won't get much, but I'd like to hear your experiences.

90%+ of the time they go for the salvage value of the materials. The jeweler then takes it apart and makes something else out of it. The exception is going to be certain antiques and certain designer sorts of items in superb condition.

Hi Neil!

So for a typical 14k gold mounting, is $100 to $200 overly optimistic? Are you talking more like $40?

Hi, Laila!
To be perfectly honest, there's no way to really estimate how much you would get without way more information. We would need to know the materials, the weight, the quality of any side stones (if there are any), etc. Even with that knowledge, your offers may vary wildly based on where you take it to try and sell it. Pawn shops are generally going to give you very little for items, as will jewelry stores. Your best bet is to figure out exactly what you've got, and go from there, and decide what you're comfortable doing.

Currently 14k gold goes for about $21/gram, plus or minus a little bit depending on the dealer. 6 grams is fairly typical. 15 is common but definitely a bit heavy. 2 is possible but definitely light.
