How much to polish a platinum wedding band?

How much usually does your local jeweler charge to polish a platinum wedding band? Just wanted to have an idea and decide whether I should pay the shipping cost to James Allen to have them polish the band (they provide free lifetime polishing but I have to pay one-way shipping), or just get the polishing done locally.

Also, is it safe to have some random jeweler down the street do the polishing on a platinum band? I mean, what is polishing any way? Is it something that requires good workmanship? Is it likely to screw up in any way?

Hmm, that seems to be something you do at a local jeweler to me, but I haven't had my platinum rings polished, so I can't speak to the price. But for anything like that, I choose a high end independent jeweler because they usually will have demanding customers and deal with higher quality goods than a mall chain store or something like that. Those chains almost never have an in-house bench and send things out anyway.

We use a local jeweler. We have a relationship with them through their watches & watch repair. They offered the polishing free.
Essentially they want to keep our watch business and hope to pick-up some jewelry biz.
If there is a good shop locally, I'd at least investigate.
That being said - I've had a chunky plat ring for years and years and never wanted it polished. I sort of like the way the metal wears....and my mother always hated it. (She claimed it looked like stainless steel,)

Anyone else?

I take mine to a high-end independent jeweler that I have used for repairs, sizing and small purchases. However, I don't like to get my platinum rings polished often. If I want a shiny silver color I will get white gold. I like platinum for the weight and feel and expect it to gray over time. I get my rings polished when I take them in to have an inspection/appraisal for insurance purposes (once every 3-4 years).

I must add that I do not wear my rings 24/7. I am careful about what I do when I wear them and limit the amount of damage and scratching.

Roughly how much does it cost to do a polishing then?

I don't think I've ever paid to have any of my plain bands polished... I think a fair number of places will do it as a courtesy?

ETA It's not a long and involved process so I wouldn't ship it out, I'd just find someone to do it locally. Not really much to screw up ::)
