How much weight did you gain during your pregnancy?

Haven, my weight gain has been really different from my mother's, but her and I have rather different body types (I take after my dad more). She had 3 kids, at ages 23, 27, and 33. For her 1st in the early 70s, they were told to gain under 20 pounds back then, so she gained only 19 with her first pregnancy, and lost it all quickly. When she had me in the mid-70s, they were a little more lax about weight gain, and she was more lax with her diet. I think she gained about 30 pounds when she was pregnant with me in her late 20s, but again she lost the weight. When she had her 3rd in her 30s (he was the oops baby) she didn't care as much about her figure, and I think she gained 45 pounds (she ate flan every day
). She lost some of the weight, but she went up about 2 sizes (she is now 5'10" size 14) and never cared dieted or exercised enough to lose the rest. She figured that as a mother of 3, she had a pass to just look how she did naturally, and be happy with it.
Weight loss afterwards: I am a lot more anal about my weight, and love to exercise, so I was adamant to lose my baby weight quickly after my first baby. I was 5'9" 150 lb. (a few lbs. above my regular 145 - size 6) when I got pregnant, and gained 35, so I was 185 when I delivered at age 30. I lost 15 with the delivery, but my weight didn't budge from 170 the whole time I was BFing. My mom said that the women in our family actually NEVER lose the weight while BFing - our bodies hang onto fat to produce the milk - so even though you burn calories when you BF, I was ravenous the entire time, and ate more than I did when I was pregnant.
However, when DS was 3 months old, I weaned him, and I started working out 5 times a week 30 mintues a day, and dieting (only eating about 1300 calories per day). I was back down to 150 by 7 mo. post-partum, and back down to my regular 145 by 9 months post-partum. The only thing is that my hips were wider after my pregnancy, and my boobs went up a cup size & stayed there, so I wore more of a size 8 than a 6 like I used to before I got pregnant - I was a size larger at the same weight.
When we started trying for the second baby, we tried for almost a year with no success, so I had to take fertility drugs which made me gain a ton of weight in a very short amount of time (Provera and Clomid). I was up to 165 when I finally got pregnant, and today, at 28 weeks pregnant, I weigh what I did when I delivered Andrew
So, I'll probably gain another 10 pounds yet, and have a harder time losing it because I'll be heavier (even though I will have gained less weight than last time). Plus, I'm 33 now, so it will be harder to lose the weight now that I'm older, I'm sure.
If all else fails, I made DH promise to treat me to a "mommy lift" at our local plastic surgeon for my 35th birthday if I feel like I need it

Haven, my Mom had 3 kids. With the first (me) she was a lot younger (24) than the next 2 (32 and 40) so I think that had a lot to do with losing it and regaining her shape. With me she lost it all and regained her skinny shape very quickly. With the one at 32 her hips spread and they never returned and she had a little belly. With the one at 40 it was basically same as 32. Even years later when she loses weight she becomes very tiny but her hips don't change.
I really feel like AGE has something to do with whether or not your body bounces back. It's just like working out for me...or weight gain/loss. It sure was a lot easier at 20 or 25 to lose and firm up than it was at 28 or 32 for me. Metabolism slows, your body changes, hormonal things are happening.
Some people who are blessed with fabulous genetics before preg will prob be just as blessed afterwards. I know a few gals who gained 20-40 lbs and went back down to size 24 hips after popping the kid out. But it seems like 'most mortals' will have a time of it if they are a little older.
HENCE, when I talk to people who are waiting to have kids but know they want to do it at some point, now I say...just be aware of the limitations your body might have 5 years from now vs 2. Not saying rush out and procreate just because you are younger, but just be aware. While I don't regret our decision to wait and enjoy each other and our lives for umm almost a decade before going this route, I also think, gee if I was 31 instead of 35, it might have been easier on my body.

With my first I gained 65 pounds! I''m 5''5" and was 105 to start. This time I started at 127 and have already gained 8 pounds at 12 weeks.
I hope to gain less than 40.
I obviously never got back to my pre-pregnancy weight the first time but I was a teenager when I had DD and I think I had a little "filling out" to do anyway.
My mother is fairly thin and she gained A LOT with every pregnancy but always seemed to bounce back. I have a sister though who is overweight and barely gains anything when she''s pregnant.

I''ve had four kids. For reference I am 5''3" and was about 105-108lbs. prior to having any kids.
My first when I was twenty and I only gained 10 lbs. After I had him, I returned back to my pre-pregnancy weight within a month or so.
My second, I was 27 and I gained about 15 at most, if even and I again returned back to my pre-pregnancy weight with a month.
My third, I was 32 and I gained 18 lbs. and I kept on an extra 8 lbs. So, I was about 115 lbs.
My fourth baby I had when I was 35 and I gained 18 lbs. and I now weigh about 125 lbs.
My body changed with each pregnancy, the first one I got stretch marks, but otherwise, my body returned back to normal as did my weight.
With the second one, I went up in pants size from a 0/1 to a 2/4/27, I had a little belly and my boobs and ring finger size got bigger.
With the third, more stretch marks and a bigger belly pouch. Overall, my body changed so my clothes were a bit tighter but I still wore 2/4/27 pants.
With the last one, I have can still wear size 4 pants, but now buy size 6/8 in dresses (used to buy size 2/4). My belly pouch is there, but bigger.
Speaking about the belly pouch, it''s not really so much a bellly pouch as it is a extra layer of fatty skin? lol.
I mean, I can wear clothes and you won''t even notice it when I wear jeans or a dress and in the morning my stomach is fairly flat, but it''s like this thick area of skin that starts right under my umbilicus and I can literally grab it. When I loose weight, it actually shows up more. This summer I decided to lose weight and dropped down to 118 lbs. and the pouch stuck out even more. go figure!
I have grabbed it a few times and told myself that I would get a tummy tuck one day, just to remove the extra fat area. That''s all, nothing else.

i started out quite thin (5''7" and 120 lbs) and gained 32 lbs in total during my pregnancy.
22 of those lbs came off within a few weeks of having the baby but the last 10 lbs took about 4-5 more months to come off. granted, it all did come off with no exercise whatsoever but I do think that breastfeeding my little one had a lot to do with it. I am still bf''ing him (he is 1 yr old) and am actually 2-3 pounds below my pre-preggo weight.
however, my abhorrence of exercise means that my belly is still a bit loose - but i figure i''ll work on that after having # 2 (we hope to start ttc''ing in a few mos

I gained 40. Started off fit and normal weight. Lost the first 20 lbs with no effort in the first 2 months. Since being cleared to exercise, I have lost another 5-7 lbs, so 13-15 to go. It''s tough because I am breastfeeding and can''t diet. I am eating healthy, but still consuming the full allotment of calories. Breastfeeding doesn''t seem to be the magic cure for me that it is for some. I seem to be back to normal in my legs, thighs and butt, but my stomach is still carrying a lot of weight. I am short, so 15 lbs is a lot on my frame. I am working out a couple times a week and hope to lose the rest over the next few months. I''d like to lose it quicker, but breastfeeding is important to me and I know I can''t cut calories while I am breastfeeding.

Wow you ladies were good. I started at "normal" weight (about 119) and gained a whopping 40lbs. Maybe 45lbs, I stopped counting at the end. I never had m/s and it was steady gain all the way. At the end it was a fair amount of water weigh (I had swollen everything). I stilll carry 5lbs more today but am ok with that. I''m 5''4.

when i gained 30 with my first, i lost the weight within 3 months max, but it took months after that for my body to be toned and not flabby.
with my second, i lost all the weight within weeks, and when my son was 1 month, i was able to fit into my pre-preggo clothes without the flab hanging over. so it took about 2 weeks for me to lose all the weight and a few extra lbs and to tone.

Yeah, my mom and sister gained 45 pounds + with each pregnancy, so I don't think I could have expected to gain much less than I did (48 pounds).
I think I'm one of those women for whom breastfeeding does nothing in the weight loss department. I think my body is hanging on to the fat in case there's a famine or something. I started out at 117, got up to 165 while pregnant. I weighed 149 a week after giving birth (didn't dare weigh myself before then), and three months later I'm down to 140, but this is with working out several times a week and jogging 4 miles at a time. People tell me that when I stop breastfeeding, the weight loss will kick in.
I only started working out and eating differently three years ago, and even then I only weighed 138. It's depressing to feel like I am so physically fit and yet to still weigh more than I've ever weighed.
But at the end of the day, my Claire is worth it, and being healthy is more important to me than the shape of my body or the number on the scale. I'm still hoping both of those departments improve a little as time passes, though!

With my first pregnancy, I started out a bit underweight and I gained 73 pounds. In my defense, my baby was two weeks late and over 10 pounds. But truthfully, I ate and ate and ate.
Second pregnancy, I started out on the thin side of healthy and gained 61 pounds.

Haven, my mother is tiny [5''-100lbs] according to my dad, she was all belly [ 20-25 lbs with all 5 pregnancies] she says it was the norm back then
my two sisters and I gained 40-50 lbs, [5''8, 5''8, 5''10] two of us had twins and we all 3 stayed with larger cup size. Loosing the last 10 was very difficult for me!

I gained 33 pounds, and had it all off by 4.5 months PP, and now at 1 year PP I''m 4 pounds less than pre-baby. I consider myself lucky that everything went right back (although I do miss the boobs!). I''m 30 now, so age may play a part.
My mom had 5 kids, spaced over 17 years, and never really had a problem with the weight. She''s about a size 6/8 these days, not as slim as when she started, but pretty darn good for being 50!

Nope. My mom gained under 30lbs each of course we were all premature. She never even more maternity clothes with my younger brother b/c he was born at 28 weeks. I started wearing maternity pants at 9 weeks or so b/c of the dreaded bloat. My mom also never got stretch marks. I really don''t think there is any correlation. Of course my mom and I have very different body types.

I am at just under 40 lbs right now (37w4d) and gained about 40 with my first. I was on track to gain less with this one and then had a few weeks where I gained a lot of weight (and I''m not really sure how!
).
I lost all the weight by 3 months with my first and had my old body back by around 7 months. I consider myself very lucky. I have my mom''s body type and metabolism and have followed in her footsteps in both pregnancy weight gain and loss.

I gained about 20-22 pounds. I was a normal, healthy weight pre-preggo.
DS weighed 6 lb, 8 oz, so not a big baby.
At 5 months post-baby, I am back to under pre-preggo weight. Not sure how long it took me, I don't really weigh myself often, but it fell off pretty quickly. I was surprised. I think it's BF and genetics.
My mom didn't gain a lot with me or my sister (my sister was 3 mos premature) but after my brother she never really got the weight off. We have completely different body types though.
Oh and I am 35.
And PUFFY, you are not human. Girl, lost your love handles by 2 weeks PP with second baby???

Just curious if you have had one of each, if that was true or not for you. Obviously, everyone is different, but curious. Among my group of friends, it seems to be true but we've all only had one, so it could be just the way we carry.

Regarding ChinaCat''s question on weight gain and the gender of the baby, I don''t think that the gender of the baby has as much to do with where you gain weight as does your body type, and where you normally store fat.
Just a couple of examples for me and my friends:
I look like an hourglass, but technically am more of a pear shape with big boobs - meaning that anytime I gain weight, it goes straight to my hips and butt, but I never gain weight in my waist, arms, back, neck, face, etc. In fact, except for my boobs now, all of the weight that I have gained during my pregnancy is in my belly, hips, thighs and butt. My arms and neck are still totally skinny. I carried the same in my first pregnancy too, and they are both boys. However, when my hips started getting wide, everyone was guessing that I was having a girl, but I said no, that''s just always the first place that I gain weight.
One of my friends gained weight all over with her two boys, including face, neck, etc. She just got bigger everywhere. Again, everyone guessed she was having girls, but that''s just how she gains weight.
Another of my friends who is having a girl is carrying all of her weight in her belly and boobs, all in front. Her hips are exactly the same around as they were before she got pregnant. She carried the same way when she was pregnant with both a boy & a girl. She is a classic "apple shape" - she never gains weight in her hips and butt, but always puts weight on first in her stomach and waist, and that''s how she gained in both pregnancies.
So, just seeing what I have in my friends and family, I think that people tend to put on weight wherever they would normally, if they had just gained a few pounds.

Was 122 lbs when DH and I got pregnant with B (age 25). I was really sick during my preg with her and only gained 8 lbs by the time they took her at 31 weeks. I had to have a cone biopsy and LEEP due to them finding cervical cancer, AND when she was 4 days old we found out she had a congential heart defect which required OH surgery (she had it when she was 16 days old). Lost alot of weight due to stress/not eating well/etc. got down to around 98 lbs. Eventually gained back about 7 lbs. and stayed that size for about a year. Then I ended up having a hysterectomy in July ''09, since then I have gained about 15 more pounds (right at 120 lbs).

I started overweight, gained 21 lbs, lost 20 lbs at the hospital. (JT was ten and half pounds)
Currently I''m almost 16 weeks and maybe gained 1-2 lbs. My goal for this pregnancy is to definitely stay under 20, preferably under 15. (again, started overweight)
Both times I got pregnant at the exact same weight.
My mom who is 5''8" and 100 lbs has 4 kids. The most she gained was 25, the least she gained was 12 (always returning to 100 lbs before another baby). All of her babies were healthy and within "normal" range.
My sis gained about 25 and then in the 8th month developed toxemia and put on another 30+ lbs. (she lost most of it at the hospital, too)
Currently I''m almost 16 weeks and maybe gained 1-2 lbs. My goal for this pregnancy is to definitely stay under 20, preferably under 15. (again, started overweight)
Both times I got pregnant at the exact same weight.

I started out full figured and still gained about 55lbs
A lot was water and now at 11 months pp I am about 4lbs from my pre-preggo weight. I didn''t really do muich but BF, and it all pretty much came off. Still, I will work harder at being healthy in the next preganancy. I look at photos when I was pg and I was seriously HUGE!
I still BF full time and thought it would make the weigt just FALL off like for my mom and some of my friends, but no such luck I guess. I plan to keep BFing for another 6months or so, so hopefully that will do something. I might just ahve to get off my butt and excercise a little

I gained close to 40 with my first pregnancy but was a little underweight to start with. Lost 30 of those lbs by 3 month PP and the last 10 lbs very slowly came off . This was despite BFing and working out about 5 days a week during the pregnancy and resuming work outs less than 2 weeks after giving birth. So yes, my body went back to it''s old self, but i had to work at it!!
I am 21 weeks into my second pregnancy and have gained about 11 lbs so far. About 10 lbs less than where i was at the same point last pregnancy, however, i started off a bit heavier. So it looks like i am right on track to gain 40ish again. meh.
Personally I don''t know too many women who gain less than 20. It seems like most are in the 30-45 range.
