How much would you pay? Is it worth it?

Hi All!

I am very new to the board, but my fiance and I were considering upgrading my ring .625 princess cut set in white gold.

We have a friend of mine who is coming out of an engagement that didn''t work out and she is selling a 2.13 Princess Cut Stone
Clarity Grade: SI1-SI2
Color Grade: I-J
Meausurements 7.08*7.00*5.20MM
Depth 74.3%
Table 78%
Polish Very Good
Symmetry Good
Flourescence: None

In a platinum setting (were not interested in the setting just would like the center stone) and she is willing to sell it to us for $5k because she bought it from her old fiance (for a higher price) and now she just does not want it any more.

Is this a good price? Are we getting our money''s worth? It has been appraised by the International Gemological Institute (IGI).

I''m not that well versed in diamond buying but it seems that a ring that could retail for approx $10K might be a good deal?

So what do you experts say?

Thanks in Advance!!

Geez, how many fiance''s has she had??? How sad!

Oh my bad, I may have described it wrong.....she broke up with her fiance and bought the ring from him because she felt bad about the break up....

She is in love with a GREAT guy now, but obviously he wouldn''t want her to wear that ring so they are selling it....

Does it sound like a good deal?

the price seems fair.

I guess I am just wondering if it is a good deal, or if we are better bet using a reputalbe jewellry store....

If its a steal, I would jump on it right now, but if it seems in line with jewelry store then perhpaps I would just deal with them??

Really need opinons here ...... ;(

Okay, 5K for a 2+ ct diamond seems really low to me. If you want others to chime in, I''m sure someone will soon...

Have you seen it? Does it look nice? If so, it''s a great price. As long as neither you nor your friend will be uncomfortable with you wearing that ring (being that it is associated with her broken engagement), I''d go for it.

Yah it seemed low to me too, but I know she payed ALOT more for it, and now she just doesn''t care (has tried to sell it for higher but doesn''t have the time to put into it)

She''s of the mindset of the money has been spent so if I can cut my friend a deal I will.....

Since I don''t know alot about diamonds and cut clarity etc...I thought it was a great price but am at a loss.....

I appreciate your response!

you can't use what she paid for it to determine the price.
from the information that you have given, 5k is more than fair.

Thanks Belle!! :)

Can anyone else offer opinions too?? Did I word something wrong? Is that why people are not responding to my post but to others???

LOL....PLEASE HELP!!

Belle is right, from what you say the price is fair. If you love the diamond and everyone is comfortable with the idea then go for it!

Don't think folks are ignoring your post, it is a difficult one to advise on - but as you have seen the diamond you are in the best position to judge if it is a good deal, at that price it could be, but more info is really needed to make a call. The cert may not be from a major lab though, if it has one, judging by the mixed colour and clarity grades so this too will make a difference pricewise. Look at the diamond for what it is, if you like it, feel it is a good deal then you can decide.

I looked but I didn''t reply because I don''t know much about princess cuts. I would try to read up on what makes a good princess(depth, table, angles) if I were you, but it is a very cheap price for that size stone. I have heard that princess cuts show more color than many cuts and with an I-J I would want to check out how much color you can see. Is it eye clean? I would also worry about only good symmetry but again, I don''t know much about princess cuts. Good luck!

Thanks!!

I appreciate your response....I will definitely do that, I was just trying to get an idea of what experts, or people with more experience than me thought of it....................

Hi.

I know next to nothing, in regard to diamonds, and what I do know is only in relation to round diamonds. But if someone could tell me, is that a depth to be scared of? Or do princess diamonds get cut deeper than rounds?

I''ve heard that rounds "face up" bigger than other cuts, and maybe that''s because of the depth factor.

I don''t know.

But what really matters is how you feel about the diamond. I don''t "get" a lot of the information on the certificates, but for the most part, I''m learning more about the "look" I''m going for for my girl. That helps, and in the meantime, I''m trying to learn more about how the "look" and the "papers" coincide.

Good luck in the decision making process!

I''m not a princess expert AT ALL ... and 5K for a 2 ct ring sounds amazing. If your eyes love it, in many different lighting environments, and you won''t have mixed feelings about having your friends'' stone - go for it.

Looking at the stone, piece by piece ... there''s plenty I''d need to "get over" by seeing it with my own eyes & seeing how I feel about it.

1. could I live with the I-J color of a non GIA/AGS certed fancy cut
2. would the 78% table & probably extremely low crown height make a less sparkly, less fiery stone?
3. would a stone with "Good" symmetry look too messy inside for me to enjoy

All of those things you could decide for yourself since you DO have the option of seeing it!

5K might not even buy a 1 ct, super ideal AGS 000 princess ... so it depends on your priorities: super ideal cut? Or larger non-ideal ... or somewhere in between!

Can''t wait to see what you decide & see pix!!!
