I really would like to pass the china on to our kids someday.

This is why I registered for good china even though we didn''t *need* it (well, that and I do expect to use it more as soon as we have a bigger place). But I don''t and won''t have an heirloom set, only some random pieces, and it makes me a little sad. So I want to be able to pass down a set to one of our future kids. That won''t keep me from using it, though!

rainwood - which pattern? i love wedgwood...

Whitby -

I have the Chester pattern, long since discontinued, but it still looks modern and fresh. It''s a bright kelly green thin band with gold overlay, coupe style rather than rim. I love it because it''s so versatile. I can put it with red for Christmas, gold & green & burgundy for Thanksgiving, and yellow & blue for springtime.

how beautiful, rainwood! i know the pattern you mean. and i love your idea of switching it up for various seasons and holidays - lovely!

i have a royal albert plain white, wedgwood osborne, wedgwood sarah''s garden for every day, one with violets on it for ladies luncheons (

) - i think it''s called viola by Queens maybe? - fine bone china, anyway. i have a williams and sonoma ''12 days of Christmas'' set for Christmas which i LOVE,and i have a hand made lime green, butter yellow and white pottery set which had made for me for summer outdoors eating. it''s glorious and looks like daffodils would look if they somehow turned into china! i also have some casual pieces like matching b&b plates, mugs and pasta bowls in pale blue and white, which can be mixed in with the white stuff or used casually. and then of course the shelley teaset. i *love* china and glassware of all kinds and collect entertaining ware before jewelry!

It sounds like you set a lovely table, Whitby. Hey, we''ll swing by if we ever get to the east coast! You can do the same if you ever get to the west coast

thanks rainwood - and you''d be more than welcome to drop by. we have a very open house policy. :) if i wasn''t in LA at the moment on my way to Australia, i''d go take some photos right now - the shelley is very pretty! i might ask tim to do it - but i just asked him to take some of my charm bracelet, which i wanted to put up in ''jewelry pieces'', so i''m not sure if this will wear out my welcome!

i''ll see what i can do!

re your china - i''d never thought of dressing up a dinner set for dinner holidays - that''s a *great* idea! it''d be lovely to do that for the seasons - nice tip! i''m going to see what i can do with mine, too!

-----an hour later-----

ok - just called tim and he took a few photos for me.

here''s a few photos...

first off the Osborne. there''s also a pile of blue and white cake plates on the right - i have no idea why - ignore them! the soup plates are there, but not the bowls, which wouldnt fit in the cupboard.

here''s some of the shelley - old and elegant :) i stayed away from gilt edged shelley; their all-enamel ware was iconic.

I don''t have any china. I wish I did though.

and a few more, tho a little further away...

and last but not least - a few of the pottery pieces tim had made for me one Christmas. i have pasta bowls, dinner plates, and various serving pieces in this. in summer, it''s gorgeous! (and maisie - come on over and share mine!)

Thank you Whitby! I am just browsing ebay to see what I can find. I love the idea of vintage mismatched tea cups. Isn''t insomnia great!

Whitby - I love the pottery pieces you have here. I''m more into earthy thick pottery rather than china. (I use to work with clay, throwing pots, etc., so I''m use to a more hefty type of media!

Thanks Whiby.

My daughter is lusting after these glasses, if they survive another generation she shall have them. These were my mom''s. They made everything a different scale, tiny salad plates in the Wedgewood set, odd size . These look perfect for a margarita but I am sure in mom''s time they held a dessert.

What a gorgeous colour they are!!

So pretty!

We have Waterford Ballet ribbon and love it. We use the dessert plates all the time for breakfast and parties and the good china when we have people over for dinner or brunch, about every other month (but we''d like to do more:-)

We only have 5 place settings so sometimes we use it with our everyday china which is Mikasa Classic Calla.

thanks, MC :) i have all sorts of wine glasses, including a set of cobalt blue, ocean blue, and emerald green. they look fabulous with this pottery and some really fine royal blue and clear water glasses i own. together it's a yummy combo and perfect for outdoors (now that we've redone our back yard!)

maisie - your new purchases are very sweet! have you thought about getting a white dinner set so you can mix and match all different service pieces etc with it as you acquire them? i buy china in dribs and drabs - a dinner plate here, 3 soup bowls there; my father got me onto collecting china when i was very young, and taught me to put together settings this way, and it's a pleasure i've had ever since. and a lot of people will happily give a cup or a plate or a bowl for a birthday or Christmas in my experience...

Thats a great idea Whitby. I will collect them as and when I find them. Its so exciting to buy something totally frivilous in the middle of the night and not have to account for it!
