How to get rid of a zillion pennies

Don't you have those little paper rollers for coins? Stick 50 in one, repeat, then cash them in at the bank.... that't what we did as kids.

Yeah, I did that for years for my dad's businesses and for my mom (she was a SAHM) and I remember feeling like the "poor kid" when my mom sent me into the grocery store with a short list and rolls of coins. Probably that is where my animosity towards change stems from. ;)

I don't mean to belittle anyone else's choices, I really don't. I was just giving my opinion on how I feel about coins now. I'm kind of sick of them, I feel like they're dirty (jeez, they get handled as much as dollar bills from strippers' g-strings!), and people get so anal retentive about collecting the quarters of different states these days (SO included). I'm just a coin hater, I guess!!!

Kenny that's crazy! I used to work at a bank and dealt with some interesting customers and their change. It blows my mind that your bank won't take your money. Like someone else suggested, I would check another bank.

You guys don't live in Los Angeles.

Granted, I haven't even tried for years, but IIRC banks said NO.
Then I saw all those machines at supermarkets that take some of your money.
I figured those machines would not exist if banks did take coins.

I'll try again.

I think the amount of my time it would suck up to roll that many pennies is worth 9.8% to just dump them into a machine.

My bank takes loose change. No charge. Most of them do around here - I'd call around and check. Although I don't see how your bank can NOT take your currency. Especially if you're depositing it. It's legal tender.

Or I use a coin star. At my regular grocery store. And get the gift card for that store so there are no deductions. And then go buy groceries. There are LOTS of options for gift cards, not just Starbucks...

For coffee: Jimmy's at UCLA, my kid works there. He makes the best coffee ever! okay, I'm a little biased.

I would probably get the papers and roll the pennies myself while watching tv. You have to write your name and acct# on the
wrapper. Then you could take them to your bank. I like mindless activities while watching tv. Just leave the bucket by the
tv and do a little at a time, if you don't want to lose the 9.8 %.

Forgive me for not remembering, but where are you? - since it is relevant to my suggestion that banks in big cities won't do it.

If you don't want to reveal whether you live in a big metropolitan city, no problem.
It is just that you wrote, "Most of them do around here ", and that is not helpful without knowing what "around here" means.

MI, Detroit Metro area. Our credit union does, and the Chase bank near my work does as well (or at least they did last year, that's the last time I took them there).

If you know somebody with an account at US Bank - give them a shot. In my area, Idaho, they don't charge. The community bank that I work for currently also has one for the customers and they don't charge for it.

These are really cool and easy to use.
