I'm probably going to post some/most of my jewelry here for sale. How do you figure out what to ask for something like a solitaire? I've used the search tool and found similar new diamonds, and I know what the setting costs new (PS vendor). How do you put together a fair price?

I think a lot depends on quality and/or brand. For example, second hand Tiffany platinum pieces generally sell for more than a generic piece. A GIA XXX or AGS ideal cut diamond will sell for more than a non-ex/ideal. Have you considered going to a jeweler and getting appraisals and advice on reasonable second hand prices?

I will add, though, if the pieces are from PS vendors and we can easily see the current prices on items, then you just need to maybe price something like 20% below retail and then say you'll consider all offers.

Ditto diamondseeker, although 20% below retail isn't enough to tempt me, honestly. For that difference I'd rather just buy a new one. It takes at least 30-40% to get me interested in a second hand piece, and I've heard 30-50% off is typical for secondhand prices.

ETA a good gauge for secondhand designer items is eBay completed listings, BTW!

if the stone is from a PS vendor then i'll be happy to pay 30-35% off.

Thanks all - I was thinking along these same lines. My stone and platinum setting are from whiteflash. And I have another whiteflash ring that I haven't decided whether or not to sell. Of course, I have the certs and appraisals for everything as well. Several other pieces too.

I'll start my research and hopefully post some stuff soon. Thanks again.

Agree with others. If its a PS vendor item I would discount 20% or so and say you will take offers...

Sounds like good advice. Thanks again everyone.

I agree. I also think you need to be aware that secondhand SI2s and I1s are going to be harder to sell, as are VVS stones. Lower clarity is harder because I am worried about inclusions and unrepresentative pictures (and criminey does the secondary market use the term "eye clean" loosely!) and higher clarity is harder because I suspect most people shopping for secondary market bargains aren't looking for that super mind-clean stone.
