So any info on what we do? Do you just let it run it''s course?

So far, I am ok.

He ate some apricots out of a newly opened bag. He did not refrigerate the bag, like tha back instructions said. He didn''t think you had to refrigerate them. Could that be the culprit?

He had cereal with the apricots, some prunes (uck) and natural almonds on it. Everything was new, and just opened, even the milk.

that is a lot of fiber...
are you sure it''s food poisoning?

Ann,

So sorry to hear this! Food poisoning is the worst! Unfortunately, he has to let it run its course. The only thing that is really super important is that he stays well hydrated- tell him to drink- Gatorade, water, whatever he can tolerate...make sure he is urinating, this is a good sign. If he is not, and he truly cant hold anything down from the severe diarrhea/vomiting, it may be necessary to pay a visit to your local ER for some IV hydration. Most cases of food poisoning last no more than 24 hours. As far as the apricots being the culprit- I am not sure...hard to tell...I am a nurse and I have had the unfortunate experience of dealing with food poisoning after a meal at a buffet- it was horrible! Good luck and let us know how he is doing!

I had it once while on vacay in FLA and ended up in the hospital for a day. Hubby just had it when we were away. He let it run it''s course and I made sure he was well hydrated. I hope your husband feels better soon.

He may just have a 24 hour bug. Mostly, it runs it''s course unless it''s bacterial dysentary. If it comes on and goes quickly, then I wouldn''t worry about it. If it lingers, then perhaps a trip to the doctor is in order.

Nothing works better for me than Ginger Ale through a straw. Try to get fluids in. Toast & crackers are something I can tolerate.

Sorry. Mostly this manifests itself in children, buy strep throat can mimic the flu/food posioning. So, if he has a fever, chills & possibly a sore throat, could be something to consider.

He needs to keep hydrated. I would take him in to be checked to be safe. I had it when I was 10. My daughter had it when she was 18 months and almost died from it. It is really hard on small children. He needs something with electrolites in it such as gatorade etc.

Ann,

To reiterate what everyone said. Keep your DH as hydrated as possible. Best of luck. Does he have a fever? It''s probably best to let it run its course. However, keep your primary care physician informed. He or she will be able to give you the best advice.

Good luck and I hope he gets better soon.

yeah definitely gatorade, even my dog gets it when he is sick

I can''t tolerate Gartorade with a puny stomach. Certainly is a good way of keeping Electolytes in bay.

How awful for your husband Ann! Hope that he is feeling better soon.

He is feeling somewhat better.

He is able to keep down some clear chicken broth and a few crackers.

I am with belle, he had a lot of fiber this morning. But considering the way it came on him and the vomitting and diarrhea, it is almost certain a case of food poisoning. I did a little research, it could have been the almonds. They were from the natural/organic section of the store. They were in a sealed bag, but they could have been contaminated with dust of bacteria. Yep, I read that. The milk was new, just opened, so it wasn''t that.

I''m just keeping my fingers crossed I don''t come down with it.

Oh Ann, I''m glad to hear he is feeling a bit better

hmmm...I am not sure. I got food poisoning in vegas when I was in high school. I can tell you my experience and maybe that will be similar to his. I was VIOLENTLY ill. I woke up in the middle of the night thowing up (and I rarely do). I thought I was going to die. It lasted maybe 12-16 hours and then I was just drained for a few days (and slightly green). Unfortunately there is nothing that you can really do and it is hard to know what caused it. I hope he feels better!

Ugh, I had salmonella once and it was worse than I EVER could have imagined. One thing to consider is that a lot of food poisoning takes a few days to set in... so it might be more likely that your husband''s was caused by something he ate over the weekend than something he ate today.

One thing that may be worth trying is charcoal caplets. Activated charcoal is used to absorb toxins, and while it didn''t completely cure me, I think it helped... especially taking it the 2nd and 3rd day when I was up and moving around more. You can get them over the counter at any pharmacy. (My dad happens to be a pharmacist, so fortunately he was able to suggest this... otherwise I would have had no idea!)

And Tacori, I''m with you... there was a point during that first day when I REALLY felt sicker than I''ve ever felt in my entire life. I wanted to call an ambulance but I was afraid I wouldn''t make it down the elevator (I lived on the 26th floor at the time) without puking and/or passing out. I think the stomach pain and cramping was actually worse than the puking and everything else... ugh... I''m miserable just remembering it!

thanks for the charcoal idea. I have read that somewhere before, but of course forgot about it until I read your post.
He is still weak, but has stopped throwing up, I hope!

once upon a time i read that there are strains of food poisoning that take 3 weeks to manifest themselves and that is one reason why it is so very very hard to track down the actual cause of said food poisoning. allergies can have similar symptoms, also. don''t envy your hubby at all.

movie zombie

Thank goodness you didn''t get it too! It can be very difficult to trace what caused the upset.

But lets hope he is feeling better soon.

Ewww- YUCK!

I''m sorry to hear about your husband, Ann, but glad he is feeling better.

I had a bad case of salmonella when I was 13. After days of being violently ill with vomitting, diarrhea, and horrible abdominal cramping, my family doctor sent me to the emergency room. I ended up in the hospital for a week. I was always a small/slim girl, and this really took me down. Even after being released from the hospital, it took months to get my weight and strength back. We never found a cause for my sickness. Everyone in my house was tested, and no one at my school had it. I''m so paranoid about it even now at 42 that I won''t let my kids lick the bowl when I make any kind of batter with eggs. I''m sure they think I''m being overdramatic. I''m sure that eggs were not the cause of my salmonella, I just won''t take the risk.

Hope your husband is on the mend and feeling better today.

I read once something about taking charcoal tablets (you get them from a health-food store). You might want to look it up. Don't know if you have to take them right away, or if later helps, or what?

"Charcoal tablets can help absorb toxins and remove them from the digestive tract through bowel elimination."

"Charcoal tablets 5 tablets at first signs of illness and again 6 hours later. Take separately from other medications and supplements. Removes toxic substances from the colon and bloodstream."

ETA: oops! Just realized someone already suggested this!
